“The People Are Responsible For The Character of Their Congress”

As we minister seeking first the Kingdom of God, we also strive to bring much needed understanding regarding our nation. That understanding includes calling out our brothers and sisters and a very large swath of many well-meaning people who don’t bother to vote, don’t understand that we could easily lose our country, and/or don’t want to know the urgencies before us.  One of those urgencies I am addressing below.

Increasingly, those with allegiance to foreign nations and anti-American ideologies are being elected to positions in government: such as Minnesota’s Ilhan Omar, New York mayor Zohran Mamdani, Michigan’s Rashida Talib, and now Michigan is at risk of electing pro-Hamas candidate Abdul El-Sayed to the U.S. Senate.

A few months ago, I received a call.  The caller had an urgent tone to his voice – it was Frank Gaffney out of Washington, DC.  Gaffney served in the Pentagon during the Reagan administration and founded the Center for Security Policy.  Frank asked: “What do you know about Abdul El Sayed?”  and asked about possible ties to the Muslim Brotherhood.  You may remember that our newsletters and events several years ago raised concern about the growing influence of the Muslim Brotherhood in America – which is linked to terrorism, teaches that jihad is an obligation for Muslims, and is now designated as a terrorist group.

When Abdul El-Sayed unsuccessfully ran for governor in Michigan in 2018, Republican candidate Patrick Colbeck raised concerns about El-Sayed’s connections to the Muslim Brotherhood.  His parents had ties to the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, while El-Sayed served as vice president of the Muslim Student Association at the University of Michigan, a group connected to the Muslim Brotherhood.  In a debate, Colbeck raised these concerns, but also made clear that he didn’t hate the Muslim people.  Abdul El-Sayed responded: “You may not hate Muslims, but Muslims hate you.”

El-Sayed, the most far-left Democrat candidate running for the Michigan senate seat, has peppered his messaging with pro-Hamas propaganda – including a fundraising email he sent on the second anniversary of the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack against Israel, in which El-Sayed attacked Israel, claimed Israel had committed genocide, and said nothing about the heinous atrocities committed by Hamas.

Recently, I’ve been receiving information from my longtime friend and New York City lawyer, Bob Peters, who once headed the regarded anti-obscenity organization Morality in Media (recently discontinued). Peters, having lived many years in New York City, had watched firsthand the emergence of Zohran Mamdani as the newly elected New York City mayor and is raising concerns about Abdul El-Sayed. Peters, alarmed at the penetration of Islamic ideology in New York City, recognizes the similar strategies exerted by the Islamist/democrat socialist El-Sayed. In fact, the National Republican Senatorial Committee characterizes El-Sayed as the “Michigan Mamdani.”

You may remember the beloved Philip Haney, who American Decency had speak numerous times throughout Michigan. Perhaps you purchased his book, See Something Say Nothing, in which he shares his powerful story regarding his successes as a member of the Customs and Border Patrol and also as one of the founding members of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in identifying hundreds of Islamists seeking to penetrate American borders.  During the 2018 Michigan gubernatorial election when El Sayed was running for governor, Philip Haney documented his campaign and the growing Islamic influence in the Dearborn/Hamtramck area.   Philip knew as well as anyone the threat of Islamic ideology that has taken root.

Dearborn, by a wide margin, has the largest per capita population of Muslims in the U.S., most of them from the same Shiite branch of Islam as those in Iran. Dearborn became the nation’s first Arab-majority city in 2023 and its mayor, Abdullah Hammoud (D), has called for the destruction of Israel.

A day after the Iranian terrorist leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed by Operation Epic Fury strikes on March 1, El-Sayed was caught telling staffers he was not going to comment on it because “there are a lot of people in Dearborn who are sad” about Khamenei’s death.  Not only was Khamenei responsible for the death of countless Americans, he murdered over 30,000 of his own people. Yet El-Sayed appeases Muslims in Dearborn with terrorist sympathies and who chant “death to America,” rather than siding with the United States.

Months ago in West Bloomfield, Michigan, Ayman Mohamad Ghazali rammed his vehicle into a Jewish synagogue where children were gathered for preschool and opened fire, before being shot and killed by security personnel.  The attack was determined by the FBI to have been a Hezbollah-inspired act of terrorism against the Jewish community. Ghazali’s brother was a Hezbollah terrorist commander in Lebanon who was killed by an Israeli strike against Hezbollah.

Speaking at a rally days later, El-Sayed seemed to excuse Ghazali, stating that it’s “critical for us to understand that hurt people do hurt people, and the circumstances happening 6,000 miles away can affect the lives that we live here, and if we stand against violence, we’ve got to stand against violence, all violence.”  The “hurt” person El-Sayed was referring to and sympathizing with was Ghazali, implying that because his terrorist brother was killed in Lebanon, we should “understand” why Ghazali wanted to kill Jewish children in West Bloomfield.  By stating we should “stand against all violence,” he equates U.S. national defense with terrorist acts.

Previously, at a July 2025 campaign event, El-Sayed also showed terrorist sympathies when he stated that terrorists commit “heinous act[s]” because they feel “pain and frustration and a level of lack of agency” due to “hypocritical” U.S. actions that are “creating pain.”  Yet where is his sympathy for the innocent lives killed by those terrorist attacks?

El-Sayed is also being criticized for his close association with radical leftist podcaster Hasan Piker.  Piker has a huge following and growing influence among Democrats.  His podcast on Twitch has millions of followers, which features hate-filled rants.  Piker has said that America “deserved” 9/11 and said “give Saudi Arabia a nuke so they can do 9/11 2.”  He has said “I do not support the United States of America” and said it “doesn’t matter if rape happened on October 7.” He is a vocal supporter of the terrorist group Hamas, stating: “Hamas is a thousand times better” than Israel.  Yet El-Sayed is campaigning with Piker across Michigan and has welcomed his endorsement.  El-Sayed doesn’t see anything wrong with Piker’s rhetoric, stating regarding Piker, “I’m not here to disavow people’s views.” El-Sayed recently campaigned with Piker at the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, where El-Sayed claimed the U.S. is engaged in a “genocidal” war in Iran because of money from the “Israel lobby.”

All of these examples demonstrate that Abdul El-Sayed is a radical leftist candidate whose sympathies lie not with the American people, but with terrorist sympathizers and radical Islamists.  

Yet this is who may represent Michigan in the United States Senate. U.S. Senators take an oath, which states in part: “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic …”  Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah, the Muslim Brotherhood – and all who support them here in the U.S. – are enemies of the United States, yet El-Sayed has defended them.  In addition, Sharia Law cannot coexist with the U.S. Constitution.  They are incompatible and therefore, as Jesus said, one will “hold to the one and hate the other; you cannot have two masters.” Which oath would El-Sayed honor?

We have a Fifth Column in our nation, seeking to undermine America from within.  Michigan voters need to be aware of what’s at stake and get out the vote! Recent polls show that Abdul El-Sayed is leading in the Democratic Party primary race.

Spiritual warfare abounds all around us, perhaps to no greater degree than in the political forces which surround us and in those candidates which are put before us to elect. Do they stand for righteousness or will they persuade us to move further from God and truth? Will they uphold the type of government which pleases God, “that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty”?

We must be informed and spiritually vigilant. Perhaps no one has stated this better than preacher turned president, James A. Garfield: “Now more than ever the people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless, and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness, and corruption. If it be intelligent, brave, and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities to represent them in the national legislature. … If the next centennial does not find us a great nation … it will be because those who represent the enterprise, the culture, and the morality of the nation do not aid in controlling the political forces.”
