We at American Decency believe that the best form of activism is to share the Gospel with others. Yes, there are many other forms of activism that we use – podcasts, email alerts, Decency Minutes, conferences, bulletin inserts – in order to educate and stir others by pointing to righteousness. But to see image bearers of God become “sons of God” is the most effective means of activism because a transformed life supernaturally brings transformed values, motives, and actions.
The Westminster Shorter Catechism asks: “What is the chief end of man?” To which it answers: “Man’s chief end is to glorify God,(1) and to enjoy him for ever. (2)”
What is it that keeps us from glorifying and enjoying God, both here and throughout eternity? Simply put, it is SIN. We are born in sin, thanks to our first parents (Adam and Eve), but we’ve committed multitudes more of our own since birth. As the Apostle Paul wrote to the Romans: “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” (Rom. 3:23) Because of our sinful state, we are enemies of a most holy God; there is no peace for us. Sin keeps us from glorifying God – our Creator – and neither can we enjoy Him now nor forever, being at enmity with Him.
That’s the universal problem; sin has condemned every man, woman, and child of every culture around the world to eternal damnation and has ruined each one’s relationship with God. What can we do? That’s the glory of the Gospel – God’s grace and love: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (Jn. 3:16)
With such wonderful news and having experienced the grace of God through the atoning work of Jesus upon the cross, bringing us to peace such that we’ve never known before, why do so many find it difficult to share with others how a sinful man can be made right with a holy God? Yes, we can share our own personal experience, but when it comes to deeper questions, some people want more than, “All I can tell you is that I was once blind, but now I see!”
“In fewer than thirty pages, Paul Washer’s The Gospel of Jesus Christ answers the most important question we can ask with the simple, unadulterated truth of God’s word. Presenting passage after passage from the Bible, Washer proclaims the holiness of God, the sinfulness of man, and the person and work of Jesus Christ, calling all who read it (to) repent and believe for salvation.” (Taken from Reformation Heritage Books online description)
There is nothing that can save us except faith in the atoning work of Jesus which was accomplished upon the cross. This booklet, however, will strengthen, inform, and stir its readers (by the prompting of the Spirit) to better understand what was done for those who believe and give a clear evangelistic call to “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.”
We believe that Paul Washer’s booklet will be of great benefit to you in fulfilling the Great Commission: “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” (Mk. 16:15)
