Since the devil attacked the image of God in our first parents, to Cain rising up against Abel in jealousy to kill his brother and fellow image-bearer, to Lamech slaying another image bearer “to my wounding,” violence against image bearers of God has been rife upon this world.
While violence (which is different than legal justice) should always be abhorred, America’s founding and political system has been one in which the peaceful discussion of ideas – regardless of how heated – was the acceptable means of coming to understanding. Strong minds, not bloody tactics or threats, were the battlefield where contests were fought. It’s not that violent behavior was unheard of; it wasn’t tolerated as an acceptable means of conquest.
Take for example, this paragraph which is part of a much larger article printed in the Boston Gazette on August 1, 1763 by a person writing by the name of “U,” denouncing violence of various kinds:
“…when such Assailants shall live unexpelled from the Legislature—when slight Censures and no Punishments shall be inflicted—there will really be Danger of our becoming universally ferocious, barbarous and brutal, worse than our Gothic Ancestors before the Christian Era.” (American Political Writing during the Founding Era 1760-1805 Volume 1, p. 36)
Though not the first to perpetuate and call for political violence, Maxine Waters, U.S. representative for California’s 43rd congressional district, made this horrendous statement in 2018: “If you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd and you push back on them, and you tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere.”
Ironically, in 2024, when others did unto her as she called others to do against the Trump administration and his supporters, she didn’t like it. Watch on “X” here.
We’ve recently witnessed yet another assassination attempt upon the President of the United States. From President Trump’s first term in office through to today, leftist comedians to leftist politicians to leftist talk show hosts, teachers, and entertainers have never-endingly encouraged, urged, and mocked acts of violence against this president, those on the right, and particularly those of the MAGA movement. Leftist violence seems to come from all quarters and walks of life. Even recently, a Virginia transgender substitute teacher was arrested for plotting a mass shooting at a local school. This is not to say that all leftists perpetuate acts of violence, but many of their ideologies do lead to violence – abortion and socialism/communism, open borders, to name a few.
The left denies its role in perpetuating violence and will even whitewash it at times; a rose by any other name will still reek of the foul smell of blood lust if that “rose’s” name is violence. Here are a few more (of many) acts/words of violence from the left. None of these things should EVER be tolerated:
Pennsylvania Democrat U.S. Senate candidate Raymond Chandler was arrested after threatening to kill President Trump and Senator John Fetterman (D-PA). Chandler left a voicemail to an unnamed member of Congress, stating, “I want you to put that firearm to the President’s head… and I want you to kill him.”
The Justice Department charged a New Hampshire FAA employee with threatening to kill President Trump.
“Star Wars” actor Mark Hamill, apparently going over to “the Dark Side,” posted an AI image depicting President Trump’s death.
Can you guess who uttered the following words?
“Assassination culture is spreading on the left. Forty-eight percent of liberals say it would be at least somewhat justified to murder Elon Musk. Fifty-five percent said the same about Donald Trump…The left is being whipped into a violent frenzy. Any setback, whether losing an election or losing a court case, justifies a maximally violent response.”
Ironically, it was Charlie Kirk, five months before he was assassinated.
Violence, threats of violence, and encouragement to violence is unacceptable. We see it directed at individual image bearers of God frequently, or even against a group politically. But let’s recognize that there is political violence (indirectly) that is even aimed at us as a nation from our own politicians, not only from the left, but from the so-called right as well.
What else would one call Senator Thune sitting on the SAVE Act instead of passing it with a majority of the nation standing behind it? Isn’t this an example of violence against our nation as a whole, attacking, in part, what defines this country? Attacking our Constitution?
What about religious violence against God’s image bearers? World Watch List 2026 reports that at least 388 Christians worldwide “suffer high levels of persecution and discrimination for their faith.” Nine of the top ten worst countries for Christians are Muslim-majority nations. As we watch Islamists infiltrate government positions, as they infiltrate our cities – bringing the violence of honor killings and potential violence against the “infidels – what should we do?
We mustn’t respond in hate – even if not acted upon, it is an internal violence which is harmful and the Scriptures warn against hatred. Rather, we are called to love our enemies and bless them that curse us. We are to do good and not evil to them who hate us. We are to pray for those who misuse us and persecute us. Corrie ten Boom said it best – “Love is the heart of the gospel.”
We must better know the Word of God so that we might better live out a holy life of faith and for us to contend for the faith, redeeming the time and having an answer for the hope which lies within us.
From the right or from the left, violence is NOT the answer; we desperately need God to rule and overrule! We need God to do this in their hearts…and in ours.
