The Importance of Unity
“United we stand, divided we fall” is a phrase commonly used in mottos or in rallying cries, urging others to stand with us against some foe. The earliest use of this phrase is found in an Aesop fable called The Four Oxen and the Lion, which can be read here.
Phil Haney used to tell me that part of the problem with conservatives is that they’ll often divide over some little thing, being distracted from the big picture, while the left will ignore their differences for the sake of winning the battle, pushing their agenda.
Our country is certainly divided, at times I wonder if irreparably so. This is to the unquestionable detriment of our nation, culture, and society as a whole. If America should survive for another 250 years, it will only be by the grace of God, but it will also depend on us becoming united on some vital, foundational principles, regardless of disagreement on “lesser” things. This week’s Decency Minutes (DM) point out three such things we must unite on, lest we fall forever.
Our first DM calls us to unite and return to our founding principles – let me remind you that they are Judeo-Christian foundations, values, and principles. It’s a call to the principles of our founding documents, particularly the Declaration of Independence and our Constitution, the law of the land. It’s a call to self-sacrifice for the good of the whole and of calling upon the one, true God in time of need, recognizing that His divine and sovereign hand interacts with His creation and on behalf of those who truly love and fear Him. Our second DM calls for us to unite around the desperate need of election integrity. This would start with those who should be allowed on the ballot – we ought not to elect enemies of our nation regardless of their denial of the fact. If they have divided loyalties or a desire to subvert our Constitution, they cannot take an oath stating that they will defend it. We have constitutional laws stating how the election process should take place. Election integrity would include proving one has a legal right to vote, the vote itself, and the counting of that vote with transparency and righteousness. Our third DM calls us to return to God and His Word – to know it, esteem it, and to live it. Most of those who read this will readily be in agreement with that, but can we recall that Jesus called for unity among His believers?
United we stand, divided we fall. Jesus said, “And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.” (Mk. 3:25) In Jesus’ high priestly prayer He emphasized the need and reason for unity among true believers. “That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me… I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.” (Jn. 17:21, 23)
It’s vital to understand that it’s by faith in the atoning work of Jesus on the cross and having our hearts transformed by His Grace that make us IN Christ; this unifies us together in peace and love with one another. It’s not only a sin to reject this unity, it’s damaging to the cause of Christ and the purpose of the Church. Do you see in those verses above why it’ important that we are one with Christ and thereby one with each other? It’s so “the world may believe that” God has sent Jesus and that they might know that God loves us. Our oneness with one another speaks to the proof of the Gospel and witnesses to the lost that God has made a way for salvation.
This extends beyond a oneness within one’s local body of believers and even beyond a oneness within one’s particular denomination. IN CHRIST there is no Jew or Greek, male or female, and no denominations either – just oneness with one another IN HIM. This oneness transcends ALL denominations and draws us together IN Christ, just as He and the Father are one. Somewhere along the line many have missed this NEED for unity.
I have a very old (1850), small hymnal; one of those hymns is entitled One fold and one shepherd. It reads thusly:
1. Giver of peace and unity,
Send down thy mild, pacific Dove;
We all shall then in one agree,
And breathe the spirit of thy love.
2. We all shall think and speak the same
Delightful lesson of thy grace:
One undivided Christ proclaim,
And jointly glory in thy praise.
3. O let us take a softer mould,
Blended and gather’d into thee;
Under one Shepherd make one fold,
Where all is love and harmony.
4. Regard thine own eternal prayer,
And send a peaceful answer down:
To us they Father’s Name declare;
Unite and perfect us in one.
5. So shall the world believe and know
That God hath sent thee from above,
When thou art seen in us below,
And every soul displays thy love.
“The unity Christ prayed for will come when, please God, the whole Church breathes together, inspired by the one Holy Spirit and thinking with the Mind of Christ.” (James M. Kushiner, Touchstone July/August 2026) Might we strive for the unity our Master prayed for.
On Whose Behalf Will Your Wages Be Docked?
After last week’s Michigan primaries, our state is faced with the very real possibility of being represented by a Muslim Senator – and a socialist Muslim at that.
As New York City’s similarly minded mayor, Zohran Mamdani, introduces his state-run grocery stores powered by discounts courtesy of their customers’ hard-working neighbors, Michigan residents are right to wonder on whose behalf their wages will be docked under this ideology.
America was founded as a Christian nation upon Christian principles, like “Thou Shalt Not Steal,” yet socialism is nothing but theft at the hands of the state on behalf of those who keep them in power.
What a tragedy it is that in the 25th year since radical Muslims murdered thousands of innocent Americans on 9/11, we’ve also given them more power in our once-Christian country than ever before.
We must return to our founding principles.
Did the people of New York actually vote for Zohran Mamdani and his anti-Semitic, Islamist regime?
Marly Hornik of RealAmerica.vote ran an audit of the Mamdani 2025 mayoral election, asking the question: Did the New York City and New York State Boards of Elections qualify every voter according to law? It wasn’t even close!
7% of the voters were synthetic identities, people who don’t even exist.
Another 6% of the voters had fake social security numbers.
And 10% of the voters didn’t live in New York any time during the entire period from January 2025 to June 2026.
This totals 23% of the votes; almost one-quarter of the votes weren’t even legal and almost no one is reporting on it!
What does this portend for Michigan as El-Sayed, Michigan’s Mamdani, runs for the senate seat in our upcoming midterms?
We must have election integrity!

Only God’s Way Leads to Contentment
In 2019, AOC – Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez – suggested people shouldn’t have children because of climate change, claiming that global warming was “going to kill us.”
Seven years later, 36-year-old AOC is freezing her eggs so that, perhaps, she can have children in the future.
Both of these are a denial of God’s creation order. Mankind is to have dominion over creation, not bow to it.
And AOC’s choice to freeze her eggs, rather than marrying her longtime fiancé and following God’s design for family, is also a rejection of creation order. She is instead choosing to one day use the unethical practices of IVF or surrogacy.
There are millions of AOC’s who bought the feminist lie that a career is more fulfilling than children.
Worship of self doesn’t lead to liberation, but loneliness and despair. Only by following God’s ways will we find contentment.
