Is God Using President Trump to Answer Nigerian Prayers?

By: Chris Johnson

Word has finally begun to get out about the atrocities being committed against Christians in Nigeria.

It’s nothing new; the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom recommended that Nigeria be recognized as a “Country of Particular Concern” by the Department of State for over a decade – beginning in 2009, one year into Obama’s first term, until the first Trump administration finally followed that recommendation in December of 2020.

Even so, this lasted less than a year, when the Biden administration removed the CPC classification in December of his first year in office. Their claim was that the violence wasn’t religious persecution; it was because of climate change. The Muslim shepherds were just killing Christian farmers so their sheep could graze on their land. Never mind that Muslim settlements are often spared and many of the massacres are carried out by known terrorist groups like Boko Haram or the Islamic State West Africa Province.

In spite of the ups and downs of US diplomacy, the death toll for Nigerian Christians has only gone up.

I wrote about it in our November newsletter: “Since 2009, 19,000 Nigerian churches have been targeted by jihadists and Muslim herdsmen, who burned them to the ground, with shouts of ‘Allahu Akbar’ in the air.

“Buildings are replaceable, but according to the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety), in that same time frame, [up to] 125,000 Nigerian Christians have been slaughtered for their faith. In just 2025, over 7,000 had been martyred by August, while 7,800 had been abducted.”

Besides writing about it in our newsletter, we also created a Decency Minute short  to bring attention to the crisis.

By the grace of God, working through some very unexpected channels, the plight of Nigerian Christians started to get some attention.

First, faithful ministries like Persecution.org, Open Doors International, and the Christian Broadcasting Network never quit reporting on the horrors.

Then, surprising allies in this human rights atrocity were found in infamous atheist liberal cable talk show host Bill Maher and the lewd and libertine pop star Nicki Minaj.

And on November 1, President Trump put the Nigerian government and the perpetrators on notice with this post: “Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter of our cherished Christian brothers and sisters—over 7,000 killed just this year alone by Boko Haram thugs and Fulani militants, with 18,000 churches burned to the ground since 2009. The Nigerian Government has done NOTHING to stop this horror, allowing these atrocities to continue unchecked.  Today, I’m proud to announce we’ve designated Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern under the International Religious Freedom Act. But words aren’t enough—it’s time for ACTION.  Effective immediately, the United States will STOP ALL aid and assistance to Nigeria until they protect their people and end this genocide. If they fail to act, I’ve instructed our Department of War [Defense] to prepare for possible FAST military action—guns-a-blazing if necessary—to defend the innocent. It will be vicious, swift, and sweet, just like how these terrorists attack our faithful. No more turning a blind eye!  God bless the persecuted Christians of Nigeria. We will stand with you. America First—but faith comes first.  #EndChristianPersecution #NigeriaCPC”

In my Newsletter article on this story, I drew this conclusion: “In our position of safety relative to our brothers and sisters in Nigeria, we must lift them up in prayer—that God would provide a solution for their safety, peace in their homes, and fruitfulness in their evangelistic efforts with the neighbors who despise them.”

Perhaps God is using President Trump and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to begin to answer those prayers. May it be so.
