Contact your Michigan Representatives & Senators, tell them NO to Driver’s Licenses for Non-Citizens (Senate Bills 265-267 and House Bills 4410-4412). Keep reading to get warned and informed.
In recent weeks, we at American Decency have warned our readers about the “flock” of Lame Duck legislation that Democrats in Lansing are trying to rush through and we, as citizens, need to do what we can to shoot them down before January’s shift to a Republican majority in the House. In that effort, we urge you to pray, get informed, and get involved by contacting your senators and representatives, urging them to vote NO on these driver’s license bills, and then urging others to do likewise.
Whenever I talk about driver’s licenses, I’m reminded of former President Reagan speaking to college students about freedoms. He reminisced about freedoms they didn’t even know they’d lost, then proceeded to tell them that there used to be no such thing as a state-governed driver’s license and one knew they were ready to drive when their father was ready to hand over the keys to a vehicle that would be of substantial cost to replace.
I doubt that even Reagan imagined how the state-governed driver’s license would, in the wrong hands, be used to undermine the election process and subvert a state’s citizens. Yet, that’s exactly what these Michigan Senate and House bills are attempting to do. Beware, they are driving us to the wrong destination, attacking election integrity among several other “stops” along the way. (Sen. Runestad [R] will address those “stops” shortly.)
“Yes, Michigan lawmakers are pushing bills forward to do this, right now. Senate Bills 265-267 and House Bills 4410-4412 aim to do just that, allow non-citizens to obtain state IDs and Driver’s Licenses. Driver’s licenses are of course the most common method to both register to vote and to vote in person at the polls.” (Michigan Fair Elections)
If one doesn’t already know, one needs to remember that House Bill 4983 was passed last December which allows automatic registration to vote when applying for a driver’s license. One can see how this both attacks election integrity and puts Michigan’s citizens at risk.
We have one high-profile example of this from Michigan’s last election when a Chinese (non-citizen) student voted in Ann Arbor. For more information on this case click here.
Sen. Jim Runestad warns that the bills we are talking about are “designed to encourage and incentivize more illegal immigrants to settle in Michigan by shielding their immigration status and prohibiting the Secretary of State from sharing license holders’ citizenship information with immigration enforcement. This would complicate law enforcement efforts and undermine public safety.”
If that wasn’t bad enough, “These bills would impose massive new costs on Michigan taxpayers. We already pay over $1.1 billion annually for services provided to illegal immigrants. Enacting this legislation would further burden state resources, creating opportunities for exploitation by bad actors and increasing security risks.”
Sen. Runestad closes out his statement with this warning: “Offering driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants serves as a powerful incentive, making it easier for them to take jobs from Michigan citizens. The most alarming consequence, however, is that it opens the door to allowing illegal immigrants to vote!”
The last day of session this year is next Thursday, December 19th, but these bills could be up for a vote within the next few days. That’s why it’s vital for you to contact your senators and representatives, letting them know your high concern regarding these bills. If we do nothing and these bills pass into state law, who knows what freedoms we may lose. We need to take every action possible to hand down a heritage of freedom to our children and our children’s children.
