Hazbin Hotel

By: Steve Huston

Amazon Prime has launched a hideous attack on God’s Word and on an unstable culture that knows precious little of Truth. Rewriting earth’s history, Amazon’s Hazbin Hotel portrays Satan as a misunderstood, good entity, while the angels of Heaven are a bunch of tyrannical bullies. As is frequently the case, Genesis is the bullseye when it comes to attacking God’s Word. I assume that’s because Genesis 1-11 is the basis for much of our doctrinal foundation and sets the stage for Who God is and man’s responsibility to his Creator. It shows us man’s need for a Saviour and God’s grace in providing a sacrifice whereby men can be reconciled to God, pointing to Jesus Christ, as the final sacrifice, for all those who believe on the atoning work of Jesus Christ on the cross for their sin.

The Bible has weathered many attacks, always coming out the victor; this attack will be no different. Yet, we need to be aware of such attacks, recognize what they do to our children and culture, and, to the best of our ability, stand against them and warn others. Rather than allowing truth to lay fallen in the street, we need to pick truth up and hold it high. God is well able to defend Himself, but we are in the midst of a spiritual battle. Let us put on our spiritual armor, particularly the shield of faith, by which we are able to “quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.”

Let’s take a look at this horrendous piece of animation.

“Once upon a time” is how Hazbin Hotel’s trailer begins, moving the viewers mind to think of Heaven, creation, angels and particularly Satan as nothing more than a mere fairy-tale. Of course, its style of animation only serves to further falsely solidify that these topics are not real, but fantasy.

Anyone who can stomach the first minute of this trailer will find that in Amazon’s revisionist account, there is no mention of God. Instead, this city, called Heaven, is protected by golden gates and “ruled by beings of pure light, angels that worshipped good and shielded all from evil.” Lucifer was simply a troublemaker with “fantastical ideas” for all of creation, but since it went against the plans of the elders of Heaven, he was kicked out. Adam and Lilith were both made from the dust of the earth, as equals as the first of mankind, but Lilith fled the garden, of her own volition, because she refused to submit to Adam’s demand for control. “Drawn in by her fierce independence, Lucifer found her and the two rebellious dreamers fell deeply in love. Together they wished to share the magic of freewill with humanity, offering the fruit of knowledge to Adam’s new bride, Eve, who gladly accepted.

At this point, rather than detailing the several falsehoods presented to mostly Biblically-ignorant viewers, let me interject that God had created man with freewill. Otherwise there would have been no need to give Adam the command to not eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil combined with its natural consequence: death. Freewill is an amazing gift from God which is either a blessing or a curse to us, depending on whether we use it, as any of our God-given gifts, for His glory and our good or for selfishness and, sometimes unrecognized, harm.

Let me just transcribe the remainder of Hazbin Hotel’s trailer: “But this gift came with a curse. For with this single act of disobedience, evil finally found its way into Earth. With it, a new realm of darkness and sin. And the order Heaven worked to maintain was shattered. As punishment for their reckless act, Heaven cast Lucifer and his love into the dark pit he had created, never allowing him to see the good that came from humanity, only the cruel and the wicked. Ashamed, Lucifer lost his will to dream. But Lilith thrived, empowering demonkind with her voice and her songs. As the numbers of hell grew, so did its power. Threatened by this, Heaven made a truly heartless decision: that every year they would send down an army. An extermination to ensure Hell and its sinners could never rise against them. But Lilith’s hope remained and her dream was passed down to their precious daughter, the Princess of Hell.

This trailer closes with “The Princess of Hell” grasping a key, stating, “Don’t worry, Mom. I’ll make you proud.”

In the midst of Isaiah’s manifold warnings in chapter five, we find these two “woes” verses 20-21: “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!

This short trailer epitomizes each of these portions. To put it bluntly, it is evil. To see such evil shouldn’t surprise us because we live in a fallen world. What should surprise us is that many professing Christians will either see no problem with this or do little to nothing about it.

As David Strom of Hotair.com stated, “What does it say about our society that one of the largest corporations in the world with millions of subscribers to its video service is heavily promoting a series in which Heaven’s Angels are the bad guys and Satan is the good guy?

Strom isn’t calling for censorship, but recognizes that “our society is going down a very dark and dangerous path. It’s one thing to debate the moral contours of the universe, what exactly God or nature demands of us, and quite another to celebrate embracing the appetites and transitory desires as the highest good.

Amazon’s attack speaks to our culture and what it will accept, but it’s a commentary on the church and us as well.

Where is the church’s voice in this? – we are called to keep, guard, and treasure God’s Word and His commands. The silence of the church on such important issues is deafening. Will you speak out against this vile attack on the Word of God? I urge you to let others know.

Dear Reader, please recognize that this next point is NOT an indictment or an accusation, although I am sure some will accuse me of such. It is truly a call to think and consider. A call to awaken out of slumber and become clear-minded, regardless of where you stand.

How does a Christian justify partnering with Amazon when it uses our dollars to create such wicked content? With so much confusion already in our culture and society, how can we take part in the creation and promotion of lies? I realize that anyone removing themselves from Amazon isn’t likely to affect them much, even if there were a mass exodus. But at some point, we must realize it’s not about them, it’s about us. It’s not even about us so much as it’s about our God and His glory. If not now, I pray that you will seriously consider just how far Amazon would have to go before you break off your alliance with them.

Has entertainment become an idol to be lifted up, while God’s Word takes a back seat? How will you and I respond?

This closing verse has so many other vast implications than the above email, but it’s a good place to start. “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?” 2 Corinthians 6:14
