Canceling Christianity

By: Steve Huston

I remember my dad and I going to Washington, D.C. for the “Stand in the Gap” rally held by Promise Keepers in 1997. It was amazing to see 1,000,000 men gathered in our nation’s capital to stand for Biblical values, being encouraged to be godly husbands and fathers. I remember when I received my poster which pictured that mass of men, my wife and children using their “eagle eyes” to see if they could spot husband and dad. A futile task to be sure, yet, they were positive they found me.

I remember reading New Man, at that time the official magazine of Promise Keepers, and the books they encouraged men to read. Their goal was for men to strive for godliness, Biblical manhood/fatherhood, and to give warning of pitfalls along the way. What God’s Word said was the final word; Promise Keepers desire was to get men on the same page with God, taking their God-ordained commitments seriously.

That being the case, it’s no surprise that when it comes to the LGBTQ+ agenda, which passes for theology in some churches, Promise Keepers made the following statement regarding “Pride Month:”

We will not stand on the sidelines and remain quiet. As fathers, husbands, grandfathers, and young men—we see the dangers of gender ideology and the harm it causes.

At Promise Keepers, we affirm that God made human beings in His image to reflect Him. He created male and female with equal worth and dignity—and there was no mistake in that design. (Genesis 1:27; Mark 10:6)

In our present day, men and women are increasingly confused about their identities. Biological identity has been severed as separate from “gender identity,” while children across the United States are actively indoctrinated into intense inner turmoil about who they “really are.”

What’s behind this change? Throughout history, humans have traditionally looked to God, the church, and their families as the starting points for identity. Now, our culture has decided each person must decide his or her own identity by looking inward—which leads to isolation, loneliness, and confusion.

At Promise Keepers, we believe it is more important than ever to stand up boldly for what we believe as Christians. God’s Word is very clear on this topic—and we also see the way gender ideology has damaged lives, mutilated bodies, and torn apart families in our own communities.

We affirm—

  • That true life and joy is found when we reject sin. (“We know that our old self was crucified with Him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.” – Romans 6:6)
  • That gender ideology is an idol of our culture and that, as sin, it is poisonous. (“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” – Prov. 14:12; see also Deuteronomy 29:18-19)
  • That marriage is designed by God to be for one man and one woman. (Mark 10:6-9)
  • That Jesus, the Son of God, will forgive our sins if we repent. (“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” – 1 John 1:9)
  • That the path of following Jesus Christ is difficult and countercultural, but it is the path of LIFE. (“You will make known to me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand there are pleasures forever.” – Psalm 16:11; see 2 John 1:6-9)

Wow, what a statement! What truly Christian, Bible-believing church, school, college, university, or ministry couldn’t get behind that?

Well, apparently Belmont University, a “Christian” university in Nashville, Tennessee could not. Even though Promise Keepers had signed a contract with the university and advertised for the event, after publishing the above statement, this school canceled its September event for this unapologetically Biblical stand.

The Christian Post reports, “The event was part of Promise Keepers’ ‘Daring Faith event series, which will occur in Houston, Memphis, New York City, and other cities. The events will focus on ‘Biblical manhood and the difficulties of navigating the tension between our Christian identity and the often antithetical identities of the culture in which we live,’ according to the statement released by Promise Keepers.

If my reader’s head was to tell his/her hand not to touch the blazing fire, yet their body’s hand reached out and was burned, doing that very thing it was told not to do, we would say there is a disconnect between head and body; it’s not working as it should. When the Body of Christ does not do what its sacred Head commands; it’s dysfunctional, it isn’t working, one must question whether it is part of the Body or not. When churches, schools, or ministries no longer follow the teachings of Jesus Christ, they reject the truth of God’s Word, can they any longer be called Christian?

In Jesus’ high priestly prayer of John 17 He explains the vast importance of us being one with Him and with one another, “That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.” Is it any wonder that the world around us doubts in Jesus as being the only way when His body, as seen by the world, is unable to be one in Him?

As this culture of insanity fires professors for teaching that sex is determined by chromosomes – described by him as “basic biology from the textbook”; when “4,000+ Churches Split from Pro-LGBTQ+ United Methodist Church Denomination;” and German Catholics bless gay unions despite Vatican ban; it’s obviously a huge issue within the culture and within the “church.”

As Christianity is being “cancelled” all around us, Gary Bauer comments on this issue, “It’s an indication of the confusion of the age that our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ often do the dirty work of the neo-Marxist [L]eft in trying to force the rest of us to sit down and shut up, rather than standing firm.  Belmont alumni may want to reconsider where their charitable gifts go from now on.

If you are a Bible-believing Christian (as if there can be any other kind), I urge you to stand fast, speaking the truth into your children, grandchildren, church, alma mater, and wherever you go. Be quick to defend the truth and those believers who are standing on that truth. Recognize that justice may be delayed but it will NEVER be denied, for truth, and truth tellers, will be vindicated when Christ returns and righteousness is recognized in all lands. His Word, which is the final say for all believers, will be seen for the final say that it is over all the world.

According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake. (Philippians 1:20, 29)
