Suppressing the Truth

By: American Decency Staff

For the last two weeks we have alerted you to the concerning reality TV show, “Sister Wives,â€Â aired on the cable channel TLC. In case you missed our previous emails, the program showcases a polygamous family of one husband and four wives living in Utah.  As we stated last week, “Sister Wivesâ€Â bends over backwards to portray this “familyâ€Â as normal as any other, painting a pretty picture of polygamy.  The program is one long infomercial for polygamy (aka their “lifestyleâ€Â) as they try to convince the viewer of how wonderful and normal it all is. One of the ‘wives’ states:  “Who says where the line is drawn of who you can love.â€ÂÂ Â  And the new ‘wife’ about to ‘marry’ husband Kody says:  “…I felt sparkly.  I felt like, oh, see this is a family.  And it made me excited to be joining the family.â€Â However, sixteen members of the family didn’t have a choice in joining.  They are the children from the combination of the four “wives.â€ÂÂ  Several of the little girls are shown playing with Barbie dolls.  The children had been given four “mommyâ€Â dolls and one “daddyâ€Â doll.  Watching the children model this repulsive lifestyle even in their play is truly sickening– as these little girls have the “daddyâ€Â doll kiss each of his wives – the four “mommyâ€Â dolls.  When the children fight over who gets the “daddyâ€Â doll, one of the wives tells the children that just as they have to share their daddy with the children of the other wives, they “have to take turns with the daddy doll, too.â€Â This episode featured the birth of the sixteenth child which the TLC network played for all it was worth.  Who can resist the wonder of a new birth?  What a great decoy as TLC pulled on the heartstrings of viewers while distracting them from the false and perverse message of the show – that “marriageâ€Â can be anything one wants it to be. TLC also subtly sends the message that those who say that polygamy is wrong are judgmental.  One of the wives complains about prejudice of those outside of their “cultureâ€Â and tearfully tells the camera, “What does it matter? (plural marriage)  Why do they care?â€Â Even while they try to convince viewers, it seems those involved recognize that what they are doing is wrong.  One of the wives is jealous of the new wife and tells the husband, “If I were to be giving attention to another guy, how would it make you feel?â€Â And here’s the kicker in the husband Kody’s response when he says:  “Obviously, it’s just not something I’m comfortable with imagining.  The vulgarity of the idea of you with two husbands or another lover sickens me.  It seems wrong to God and nature.  And I understand this seems somewhat hypocritical and I don’t know how to get around it.â€Â Sorry to tell you, Kody, there is no way around it.  Not only is it hypocritical, not only is any form of so-called marriage outside of a monogamous marriage of one man and one woman “vulgarâ€Â and “sickening,â€Â you hit the nail on the head when you acknowledged it’s wrong to God. Their God-given consciences betray them, even as they “suppress the truthâ€Â as it says in Romans 1.    And Romans 1 offers a clear warning to those who buy the lie being sold by TLC and “Sister Wives.â€Â “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.  For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.  For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.  … (28) And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.â€ÂÂ  Romans 1:  18-21, 28 Send a message to the advertisers that sponsor this debased show which undermines marriage and family.  Last week many of you responded and we heard from one of the advertisers, Disney Pictures.  The Disney representative who called us stated that they were getting “inundatedâ€Â with emails.  (However, the Disney Pictures ad for a Beauty and the Beast DVD still aired on last night’s new episode of “Sister Wives.â€Â) One especially concerning advertiser is the Hasbro company which advertised six times last night and also advertised on previous episodes.  Hasbro products include toys and games geared toward family and children.  (such as Tonka and Playskool)  And while their ads for board games encourage “family game night,â€Â their advertising supports a program that undermines marriage and family.
