We have often commented, lamenting that Americans have short memories, nationally speaking. Whether it’s 9/11, the failed trial of socialism within our own history, the ways in which socialism and communism have left hundreds upon hundreds of thousands of dead in its wake, or the good Hand of God in providentially erecting this nation and blessing it, and the history of His intervening on our behalf when we have humbled ourselves and called upon Him, we are a forgetful people.

It’s not just America’s people who have this trouble. I think upon the following Scriptures and realize that trouble comes to those who will not remember the truth of their history and that of the one, true, God:

“Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph.” (Exodus 1:8)

“…there arose another generation after them, which knew not the Lord, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.” (Judges 2:10)

That is one of the reasons why God’s Word directs us to “Remember” and commands his people to teach their children, passing God’s commands, remembrances of His goodness, and His expectation of holiness down through succeeding generations – so they will not forget, so they will be blessed. (Deut. 6) Yet even with such commands, God’s people did forget and needed to be reminded that He is real, He is almighty, and He rules in the affairs of men.

America seemingly has forgotten the many ways in which God has shown Himself mighty on our behalf. American schools used to teach history from a providential perspective; then the main focus skewed away from God, putting economics in the center of things; and now the left has hijacked and centered its focus on slavery and cultural bents, ignoring the truth because it doesn’t fit their agenda.

As we look at our Decency Minutes (DM) this week, we are reminded (in our first DM) of God’s hand in America’s founding, giving us a spiritual bedrock, upon which to build a strong and lasting nation. Our founding documents and the speeches of our founders are full of Scripture and a strong recognition that God reigns. His providence smiles on those who will be faithful to Him. They believed that any lasting nation must be build on the pillars of virtue and religion; these were essential for maintaining a free and just society. They viewed these two pillars as necessary for fostering moral character and civic responsibility among citizens.

Today, those pillars are crumbling and the five pillars of Islam are being taught to our children. Instead of teaching Christianity as our founding religion and showing respect to the tenets of the Christian faith, it has been largely ignored in our schools, swept under the false rug of separation of church and state. We went from Congress printing Bibles for schools to schools saying they are not allowed there.

We’ve forgotten what our church fathers had warned about Islam, that it’s a false religion and a judgment from God upon a people who are neither standing strong upon nor witnessing to a firm foundation of faith. We’ve neglected to remember and then rejected what strong men from the West’s history have said. Our second DM reminds us of a couple such men and their words.

What is the answer? There is only one hope, that is returning to God and speaking the truth – remembering and teaching. It will require having tough talks with others, which is much different than talking tough. We must share the truth – based on God’s Word – in love; pray for our nation, its people, and our enemies; and not grow weary in this well-doing. Remember, each one of us have been put here for such a time as this; let us walk boldly and obediently. May God grant to us hearts befitting the Ninevites: Might we humble ourselves, fast, and cry out to God. “Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?” (Jonah 3:9)

Regardless the results, let us hope in God, recognize His goodness, and continually point to Him, His Word, and His goodness.

“And keep the charge of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:” (1 Kings 2:3)

Join Us for a Great Awakening

Our Constitution is under attack from those who want to tear down the faith and freedom upon which our nation was founded.

This Thursday is Constitution Day.  As we strive to preserve this God-ordained document, it’s important to recognize God’s providential hand throughout our nation’s history.

The compelling film, A Great Awakening, tells the true story of the revival which laid the groundwork for the establishment of one nation under God.

As John Adams said, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

This powerful film reminds us that spiritual revival is still the only hope for America.

Join us for a free showing of A Great Awakening on Thursday, September 17 at 1:00 PM at American Decency, 203 E. Main Street in Fremont.

Mis-Remembering Islam

Last week we remembered 9/11, but were encouraged to MIS-remember Islam as being peaceful and benign, neglecting to lay the atrocities of that horrendous day at the feet of its Islamic perpetrators.

However, history is replete with quotes from men who led with valor, urging us to remember Islam for what it truly is:

England’s Winston Churchill stated, “No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund (meaning dying), Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith.”

America’s President Theodore Roosevelt warned: “Christianity was saved in Europe solely because the peoples of Europe fought the Mohammedans who invaded them… Had the victorious Moslems advanced farther into Europe, the Christian religion would have been exterminated.”

As a Christian, in loving the Muslim, I must share the true Gospel of Jesus Christ and point to the one true God.
