As we close out 2025 and ring in the new year, spending the first few days stumbling over writing the correct date on checks and forms and looking ahead to what 2026 might bring, let’s spend at least a few moments thinking about what is represented by those 4 digits we’ll categorize the next 365 days under.
Two thousand and twenty-seven years ago and for all the years prior, every nation marked its time by the years of rule under a king, i.e. “In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah,” or “Now in the days of Ahasuerus… in the third year of his reign…” The years were categorized by the reign of each particular king they occurred under, separately, in each nation.
In fact, although we never think of it, we still do that same thing. The new year will be recognized by many as 2026 A.D., which is an abbreviation of Anno Domini, which is Latin shorthand for, “in the 2026th year of the reign of our common Lord, Jesus Christ.”
All that may not fit on a check, but every time we write the year, we are recognizing the Lordship of Christ. Even those academics who use “2026” C.E. (Common Era) are admitting that the coming of Christ united the people under a common Lord two thousand and twenty-six years ago.
We hope that we have been of use in strengthening Christ’s kingdom in the past year, and our prayer is that this ministry will continue to be of service to the King of kings in the year ahead. If you see fit, would you consider supporting ADA as we prepare to continue to minister in the year ahead? You can donate online by clicking this link, or by mail at:
