I sensed the call early after I was saved. I was convicted of sin and I woke up (not in the current vernacular of WOKE but in the “once I was lost and now I am found – I saw the light and the light was Jesus” kind instead.)
I became so burdened over the darkness of pornography and the desensitizing, degrading impact of pornography – I wanted to do something about it. I knew of it personally, not just theoretically. And being a teacher of young children, seeing the massive changes for the worse on television, I was burdened. I prayed: Father God: Please lead me into a position where I can warn and inform and lift up Christ as Savior, Lord and Teacher of discernment between the holy and the profane.
Almost immediately I came across a printed newsletter from a ministry named at that time (early 1980s) National Federation for Decency (NFD) – now American Family Association. It was all in black and white at that time – and no pictures just attention getting titles and pages laying out details of the battle that we were in – the battle for America and for America’s children and souls. The main man, a man with the unusual name of Wildmon – wild man, if you will – the Reverend Donald E. Wildmon.
His fight was against pornography and indecency over our airwaves, and he was a man that really meant business. That became eminently clear to me over the next months ahead! I had found a leader who shared my burden.
There are other significant things that took place – that’s for sure. [In another place and time we’ll expound on those – whether it be at our launching of our upcoming podcast (called Finally, A Decent Podcast) or at our 40th anniversary thank you celebration now scheduled for Friday, July 11 in Fremont at the Faith Baptist Church, 7729 West 48th Street at 5:30 PM with a featured speaker to be announced soon. Stay tuned. If you care about our ministry, you need to prayerfully come if at all possible. Do mark your calendar.]
But this week our ADA will be drawing attention to our flag ship that launched us out (1987) as brother Don Wildmon’s first state director – THE AFA OF MICHIGAN – under the nationally noted American Family Association (renamed from NFD in 1988) based in Tupelo, MS and also the parent organization of American Family Radio.
Our relationship with AFA is deep and wide, as is our library of pictures and videos of our time with American Family Association. So, it is with great pleasure that we bring to you the documentary of Donald Wildmon entitled, “Culture Warrior: “Don Wildmon and the Battle for Decency.” This documentary was produced by American Family Studios and was four years in the making as they worked over those years accumulating pictures, testimonies, videos, and news pieces from the past that documented the leadership of one of America’s true cultural warriors in the 20th and the initial years of the 21st century.
My title for this article is: “A Man Who Fought Kinda Like Trump”. You might ask: “Really?” To which I would say: “REALLY” – though much more sanctified than President Trump. Don Wildomn was the most focused man I ever met. Many others would say the same! He saw the need. He was deeply burdened for America beyond anyone I ever met, and when he spoke people listened – and I mean all people, including political leaders and spiritual leaders like Dr. Jim Dobson, Bill Bright, Tony Perkins, Alan Sears, Sandy Rios and the list goes on. He was, as he said, “a pulpit minister” – a small-town pulpit minister. He was good with that. But he got a call from the Lord and he answered the call and never looked back.
Much can be said and is said in the documentary, listing the fights that he fought and how he got the attention of Playboy’s Hugh Hefner, CBS, and many corporate heads throughout America. You’ll see that in the documentary.
What got me so attentive to him right away was his integrity. His honesty. His humility. His servanthood spirit. His willingness to do the dirty work. He wasn’t about making a name for himself. And, like Trump, he was tireless.
He would say throughout his years of leadership: “We aren’t called to be successful, but to be faithful. God will take care of the rest.”
How else was he like Trump? He fought relentlessly and creatively – often outthinking those who opposed him. You’ll see that and so much more in this movie about a humble man of God with a whole lot of heart, a whole lot of guts, and a calling that he knew was from God!
