The Need for Prayer

By: Steve Huston

A nation in distress from threats at home and abroad; a lawless government (all three branches), rarely even trying to pretend to follow the Constitution – but we do thank God for those few who are striving faithfully against lawlessness and ungodliness; a culture bent on self-destruction; technology and medicine, by and large, ignoring truth and science for a larger, globalist agenda; self-centeredness and pride pulling families apart; increasing numbers of churches fearing and pleasing men rather than striving to live by the holiness of God: O Lord, God, we need you!

If you believe that God sovereignly works through the faith-filled prayers of His people, we invite you to join us at American Decency, 203 E Main Street in Fremont, this Thursday, May 2 at Noon for the National Day of Prayer – as we cry out to God in humble repentance and ask for His mercy upon our nation.

In these next few days leading up to the National Day of Prayer, as we come to the “Throne of Grace for help in time of trouble,” let us, by God’s great grace, ready our hearts to pray by the words of II Chronicles 7:14; “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Take encouragement from faithful men of long ago as they encourage us to pray:

“Bear up the hands that hang down, by faith and prayer; support the tottering knees. Have you any days of fasting and prayer? Storm the throne of grace and persevere therein, and mercy will come down.” ~John Wesley

“A weak hand with a sincere heart is able to turn the key in prayer.” ~William Gurnall

“Engage God from His promise when thou pray against any sin; show God His own hand in such promises as these: ‘Sin shall not have dominion over you’ (Rom. 6:14). ‘He will subdue our iniquities’ (Mic. 7:19). Prayer is nothing but the promise reversed, or God’s word formed into an argument and retorted by faith upon God again.” ~William Gurnall

“Though we die, our prayers do not die with us. They outlive us, and those we leave behind us in the world may reap the benefit of them when we are turned to dust.” ~John Flavel

As you prepare to pray, take heed:

“Our prayer may be hindered in two ways: by lying in any sin we commit against God or in wrath, by not forgiving our brother’s sin committed against us. Those two in our Lord’s prayer cannot be divorced: ‘Forgive us as we forgive.’” ~William Gurnall

We are people in need of God’s mercy and grace. Let our prayers echo David’s: “Hear the right, O LORD, attend unto my cry, give ear unto my prayer, that goeth not out of feigned lips…Shew thy marvellous lovingkindness, O thou that savest by thy right hand them which put their trust in thee from those that rise up against them…They have now compassed us in our steps: they have set their eyes bowing down to the earth; Like as a lion that is greedy of his prey, and as it were a young lion lurking in secret places. Arise, O LORD, disappoint him, cast him down: deliver my soul from the wicked, which is thy sword: From men which are thy hand, O LORD, from men of the world, which have their portion in this life, and whose belly thou fillest with thy hid treasure: they are full of children, and leave the rest of their substance to their babes. As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.” (Psalm 17:1, 7, 11-15)

Come pray with us at American Decency, 203 E Main Street in Fremont, this Thursday, May 2 at Noon for the National Day of Prayer – as we cry out to God in humble repentance and ask for His mercy upon our nation.
