Join us in prayer on the sidewalk TOMORROW

By: Steve Huston

Several election cycles ago I saw the bumper sticker featured at the heading of this article. It’s great advice: Pray for our nation (2 Chronicles 7:14); Vote (Do your civic duty); Pray for our leaders (1 Timothy 2:2).

We urge you to join us on the sidewalk in front of the American Decency building (203 E. Main St. Fremont, MI) as we pray for God’s grace and mercy upon our nation, recognizing that our hope lies solely in our God. The prayer vigil will be from 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm, but we encourage you to come at 2 pm as we will gather together inside to pray with one another beforehand. There will also be pizza, cookies, coffee, and water available before and during our praying on the sidewalk. This is NOT a political event in any sense of the word. We are only coming before the throne of grace to find help in time of need; this nation IS in great need, regardless of the election’s outcome. Join us for the whole time or stop for a few minutes; we welcome all who have a burden to pray for our nation.

Over the weekend I received the latest edition of Herald of His Coming, Rich Carmichael’s opening paragraphs in The True Source Of Hope For The Nation well explain why we are standing in prayer encouraging our community to pray:

Much attention in the U.S. is on the election of a new president… Such attention is understandable in light of the significant impact the president will have on the future of the country (and beyond). The major political parties and the American people seem as polarized as ever, and it seems the stakes of this election could not be any higher.

Something vital to keep in mind, however, is that the well-being of the U.S. (and any country) is not ultimately a political or governmental matter, but a spiritual one. Governments, of course, have their God-given roles, and those roles are of great significance. And we, as God’s people, are called to be subject to the government and to pray for those in authority (Rom. 13:1; I Tim. 2:1-2). But at the same time, the Lord does not call us to look at the government as our hope. The Lord alone is our hope. ‘“The LORD is my portion,” says my soul. “Therefore I hope in Him!”’ (Lam. 3:24). Our hope is anchored in Him, in His Word, in His salvation and in His mercy (Psa. 119:114, 166; 147:11).” (emphasis added)

Prayer may be a simple matter, but it is not an easy task; it’s warfare! A different author reminds us: “You can expect the devil to beset you on every hand, to oppose you in ever way possible, and to do everything in his power to choke you down and to discourage you. But brother, sister, pray through! Face the battle and fight it through to the finish!

It is our desire that you would join us in praying for our nation, our leaders, and the people of this great country. If you are unable to come to the American Decency offices between 2:30 – 4:30 pm tomorrow (11/5) for whatever reason, we urge you to stand firm with God’s spiritual armor on; be in the business of spiritual warfare where you are (prayer and speaking truth), worship God in prayer and praise; and let the love of Christ constrain you in prayer and in dealing with others. Without God’s love, we are nothing more than a clanging cymbal.

I will close with David’s prayer in Psalm 43; it is my prayer as well:

Judge me, O God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation: O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man. For thou art the God of my strength: why dost thou cast me off? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles. Then will I go unto the altar of God, unto God my exceeding joy: yea, upon the harp will I praise thee, O God my God. Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.
