Creating Motherless Children

By: Lisa Van Houten

Just days ago, we celebrated Mother’s Day, recognizing the irreplaceable impact of a mother’s nurture and love. The bond between mother and child is a marvelous aspect of God’s design.  Yet untold numbers of babies are purposefully being robbed of that unique bond and extraordinary love.

Surrogacy is a rapidly growing industry in the U.S. which turns babies into commodities to be created for the purpose of being bought and sold.  Women are paid to sell their eggs; other women are paid to rent their wombs and carry a baby for nine months only to hand it over to unvetted adults.  With adoption, potential adoptive parents are required to go through extensive background checks and home inspections to ensure the protection and welfare of the baby or child. Surrogacy, however, is unregulated and unaccountable; there is no oversight.  It’s merely a contractual agreement to create a baby to fulfill the whims and desires of adults, with no consideration or safeguards for the baby’s well-being.

The normalization of those who identify as LGBT has led to an explosion of commercial surrogacy – for obvious biological reasons.  Now, with the transgender craze causing infertility through the use of puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and genital mutilation surgeries, expect to see the market for commercial surrogacy only increase.

Male homosexual couples and single men make up a large percentage of those buying babies through surrogacy. Men without wombs renting wombs to create motherless babies.  It’s an utter mockery of motherhood, sending the message that a mother isn’t necessary in a baby’s life; her only value is to serve as an egg donor and incubator.

Often these IVF-created babies are “designer babies” where DNA testing is done to create a baby of the requested sex, discarding embryonic babies which don’t meet the criteria the baby-purchaser requested.  Check out this contemptible video of two gay men bragging about how they picked out the “egg donor,” otherwise known as mother, of the baby they bought through commercial surrogacy.

Immediately after birth, these babies are ripped away from their biological mother and the woman who carried and bonded with them for nine months.  A baby knows his or her mom’s voice and heartbeat and instinctively searches for the physical nourishment of mother’s milk and the emotional nurturing that only a mother can give.  Studies have conclusively shown the importance of bonding between a mother and baby immediately after birth, including helping to make hormones and chemicals in the brain that help the baby’s brain to grow. Another study shows that “when a baby is taken from its mother for even a brief period early in life, this traumatic event significantly alters the future, adult function of the brain.”  Long-term, that bond is essential for a child’s social, emotional, and cognitive development.

That mother-baby bond is clearly evident as shown here and here.  You can’t help but smile when you see those clips.  Compare those heartwarming images to this video which shows a newborn, born via surrogacy, handed over to a hairy-chested biological man identifying as “transgender.” If you’re like me, you feel sickened to see this distressed baby taken from the mother who gave birth to him and given to this pervert.  I grieve for that baby who is quivering and crying, seeking his mother’s comfort, knowing he most likely will never know a mother’s love.  And the hospital plays along with this deluded man – allowing him to lie in a hospital bed and treating him as if he were the one who gave birth.  And we should feel sickened.  Anyone whose God-given conscience isn’t deadened knows that this is wrong and is an affront to God’s good design for families and the raising of children.  We treat puppies and kittens better than babies born via surrogacy.  Animals get to stay with their mother for several weeks after birth before being given away or sold; these babies specifically created to be sold are immediately ripped away from their mom after birth.

Of course, in the case of adoption, babies and children also lose the connection to their biological parents.  However, adoption is a redemptive act – redeeming what has been broken through abuse, neglect, or a young mother facing an unexpected pregnancy and wanting a better life for her child than what she can give.  And even in adoption a hole is often left in the adopted child’s life that can be difficult to fill.  Intentionally creating a motherless or fatherless child is a selfish act, prioritizing the desires of the adult, while denying a child what it needs to thrive – both a mother and a father.

With commercial surrogacy, what’s best for the child is never even a consideration.  As mentioned above, there is never a background check.  Anyone can hire a surrogate to carry a baby and hand it over to the buyer – no questions asked. In recent months, YouTube celebrity, Shane Dawson and his homosexual “partner” contracted to create twin boys through surrogacy.  Dawson has admitted to masturbating to pictures of minors and googling child pornography, calling images of nude babies “sexy.”  There is no way he would be allowed to adopt a child, but there’s nothing stopping him from creating one (or two) through surrogacy.

Who knows how many babies are created for vile, evil purposes. Increasingly we’re seeing accounts such as what recently came to light in Chicago.  As USA Today  reported in March: “A Chicago veterinarian and national dog show judge was arrested and charged with knowingly distributing child pornography. This happened days before his surrogate was expected to give birth to his child, whom he said he was planning on sexually assaulting, according to court documents.”

Adam Stafford King, this regarded Chicago veterinarian, was caught by the FBI when federal agents seized another pedophile’s phone and discovered King’s messaging on Telegram and Scruff.  Not knowing he was texting with the FBI, King reportedly shared “account images and videos depicting illicit material involving children” with the agents and claimed that he “had a large digital cache of child pornography stored on Telegram.”  King discussed how he preferred boys in the “single digits” (under the age of 10).  He also allegedly admitted to having “previously drugged and sexually abused his nieces and nephews,” and that he was planning to sexually molest the baby boy he was obtaining through surrogacy, due to be born March 29.

This is not an isolated event; here’s another example.  With surrogacy being completely unregulated, there is no way of knowing how many babies have been created for the purpose of being horrifically abused and no one is ever the wiser.

In a very real sense, surrogacy is child trafficking.  Because it exploits women and commercializes the sale of babies, surrogacy is banned in most European countries. However, there are still countries where surrogacy is a lucrative business, such as Ukraine, where 25% of all international surrogacy takes place.  The Casablanca Declaration is a group seeking to ban surrogacy worldwide.

Here in the U.S., not only is there no federal ban on surrogacy, there’s no federal oversight of the practice.  Some states have banned surrogacy, however here in Michigan, Democrat Governor Whitmer signed a law last month that reversed our state’s ban on commercial surrogacy and Democrat-led Minnesota is in the process of loosening laws to enable it.  California is also a hotbed for surrogacy.  As the Daily Signal states: “Our laws should encourage, whenever possible, married mothers and fathers to raise their children. We shouldn’t legalize the buying and selling of children, especially when such contracts reinforce disordered sexual fantasies and serve as a vehicle for adult wish fulfillment.”

Babies are not a commodity to be bought and sold; they’re image-bearers of God and how and by whom they are nurtured is vital to their well-being.

As conservative commentator Allie Beth Stuckey expresses: “We create babies with the express intent to rob them of their right to/need for a mom and dad. We claim they’re fine, but that’s only because babies can’t articulate that they’re not. We take advantage of their inability to defend themselves in service to adult wants. Nothing is more cowardly and cruel.”

Christians know that God is the author of family.  Our culture says that “love is love” and any grouping can be a “family.” However, we are not free to define family in any way other that what our Creator has determined – a mother and a father.  Both are necessary for reproduction and both are necessary for the emotional, physical, and spiritual needs of children. A mother and a father each have a unique and vital role to play in a child’s development; those roles are not interchangeable. Even secularists acknowledge that which has long been recognized:  the nuclear family unit is indispensable to maintaining a healthy society.

A culture that arrogantly continues to thumb its nose at our Creator God, taunts His authority, and calls evil good is a culture deserving of His judgment.  As Billy Graham reportedly once stated: “If God doesn’t punish America, He’ll have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah.”
