Politics isn’t a “dirty” word, but it IS a dividing word. Many things (both political and “religious”) throughout history have been done in the name of Christ which certainly would not have His approval. Politically, we seem to be facing very similar obstacles today. Christians might: debate a candidate’s moral or positional stand, consider a platform which has made vital foundational changes which are not Biblically aligned, take into question “the lesser of two evils” while hoping for the best, and, hopefully, weigh this all out against a Biblical backdrop. In other words, we should always consider: “What Would Jesus Do?” or “What does the Bible say about that?”
What makes this all the harder to reconcile is the fact that there are faithful Christians who will have spent much time in prayer and in searching the Scriptures, yet these true believers may come to differing conclusions. In Ephesians chapter four, Paul talks about the unity that must be ours in Christ: “There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.” (v. 4-6) With all this oneness, ought not believers come to the same conclusion, even regarding politics?
As you read or listen to these Decency Minutes, I urge you to walk away with a commitment to both 1. “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Tim. 2:15) and 2. Put Paul’s words at the beginning of Ephesians chapter four into practice. “I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” (v. 1-3)
It’s good to have discussions regarding politics and the Bible. But it’s vital to show grace and love to others as we do so, knowing, with humility, we likely do not have it ALL correct.
What Defines the Republican Party?
The Republican Convention and its platform have revealed a change in the political landscape. The Republican base – social conservatives, Evangelicals, traditionalists – are now looking around inside this big tent and finding that we share it with homosexuals, porn stars, at least a handful of transgenders, and certainly many pro-choice voters.
The Republican party is clearly not a party defined by conservative Christians any longer. The question is, can conservative Christians still be a part of it?
What the party does stand for, as stated in its platform, most of us would agree with. But ought Christians to stand with an organization that abandons the cause of saving unborn lives so that it can focus on other vitally important issues?
This will be a decision left to each of our consciences, but, regardless, the pro-life cause must now get to work, not just to win over the country, but to win the GOP back.
Kentucky Representative Thomas Massie said, “Tyrants always reward compliance with more tyranny. Do not comply with tyrants.” Yet, on both global and national scales, tyranny seems to be the goal of many leaders.
Whether we’re looking at the World Economic Forum’s Klaus Schwab, the World Health Organization’s Tedros, Biden and many from the Left here at home, or even governors of individual states, many seem bent on tyranny. Having unshackled themselves from constitutional restraints, their one desire is to shackle you and me.
But we needn’t be shackled in every way; Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn advises: “You can resolve to live your life with integrity. Let your credo be this: Let the lie come into the world, let it even triumph. But not through me.”
Better yet, for real freedom, put your faith in the eternal Son of God, Jesus, Who said: “Whom the Son has set free is free indeed.”
On July 13 we experienced a monumental national event as President Trump was nearly assassinated. There’s no doubt that God’s gracious hand of protection was upon Donald Trump, as he himself recognized, stating that it was “God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening.”
A slight turn of the head was the difference between a minor injury and what would have been a catastrophic bullet to the brain. Proverbs 21:1 tells us that God turns the heart of a king wherever he will. The Lord is also sovereign over the turning of a former president’s head.
We don’t know the purpose in God’s providence. Was it to call President Trump to salvation? Was it to spare our nation the turmoil that would have otherwise ensued?
Pray that as God turned Donald Trump’s neck, that he will also turn his heart to Christ and His righteousness.
