Another week, another indictment of former president Donald Trump.
You don’t have to be a fan of Trump to recognize this is an egregious and unprecedented weaponization of our legal system to take out a political opponent. This selective prosecution/persecution is another example of our two-tiered justice system.
While Donald Trump is not my first choice in the Republican primary, no matter what your opinion is of Trump, the Democrats’ use of law enforcement to target their chief political rival and influence the upcoming election is a breathtaking abuse of power and the rule of law. Yet, lest we forget, last November when a reporter asked Biden about Trump potentially running for president in 2024, Biden stated: “Well, we just have to demonstrate that he [Trump] will not take power … if he does run. I’m making sure he, under legitimate efforts of our Constitution, does not become the next president again.” This was just months after Biden’s DOJ raided Mar-a-Lago. However, there’s nothing legitimate about Biden’s and the DOJ’s efforts to indict Trump.
It is beyond ironic that the Democrats want to put Trump behind bars for questioning the integrity and results of an election, while they blatantly weaponize the legal system to influence and undermine the 2024 election.
This latest indictment, the fourth against Trump, was brought by the leftist Democrat District Attorney of Fulton County, Georgia, Fani Willis – who, while running for office, campaigned on getting Trump. Willis empaneled the Grand Jury in early 2022, but slow-walked the case, waiting until the midst of the Republican primary campaign to bring these charges against Trump.
Along with indicting Trump, Fani Willis also indicted 18 of Trump’s associates, such as his former attorney Rudy Giuliani and Trump’s former chief-of-staff Mark Meadows. Many believe the prosecutor hopes to convince one of them to flip and testify against Trump.
Donald Trump, and these associates, are being charged with what Willis claims was an attempt to “conspire and endeavor to conduct and participate in criminal enterprise” to overturn the 2020 election. A “criminal enterprise”? She’s using RICO laws – which are used to break up actual criminal enterprises such as the mafia or drug cartels – to claim that Trump’s questioning the integrity of an election and his calling for investigations into that election was a “criminal enterprise.”
Here are just a few examples Fani Willis lists in this recent indictment which she claims is evidence of a “criminal enterprise” and “an overt act in furtherance of the conspiracy.”
“Meadows sent a text message to United States Representative Scott Perry from Pennsylvania and stated, ‘can you send me the number for the speaker and the leader of PA Legislature. POTUS wants to chat with them,’” the indictment reads. “This was an overt act in furtherance of the conspiracy,” Willis states in the indictment.
The indictment also charged Trump with conspiracy for tweeting: “Georgia hearings now on [One America News Network]. Amazing!” “This was an overt act in furtherance of the conspiracy,” according to the indictment.
The indictment also charged Giuliani for retweeting this: “Georgia Patriot Call to Action: today is the day we need you to call your state Senate & House Reps & ask them to sign the petition for a special session. We must have free & fair elections in GA & a this is our only path to ensuring every legal vote is counted @realDonald Trump.” Again, the indictment claims: “This was an overt act in furtherance of the conspiracy.”
So, engaging in First Amendment-protected activities – such as free speech and urging people to “petition the government for a redress of grievances” by calling their state representatives – are now “an overt act of conspiracy.”
As a writer at The Federalist makes clear: “At the end of the day, Willis’ sham indictment is nothing more than a blatant, Democrat-backed attempt to criminalize Americans’ First Amendment right to free speech. It’s not just designed to silence Trump and his associates, but anyone who dares to go against Democrats and their Marxist agenda.”
Getting Trump is just part of a larger strategy. By piling on charges until something sticks, the Left is sending a message to other Republicans running for office that they can expect the same if they challenge the uni-party swamp.
Even more so, it’s a warning to everyday Americans. As The Federalist article mentioned above warns: “Much like the other indictments leveled against Trump, Willis’ charges are just a preview of what leftist politicians across the country want to do to everyday Americans. If they can do it to him and other notable Republicans, they can — and will — do it to you.”
In Habakkuk the prophet laments, “…justice goes forth perverted.” Perverted justice – what an apt description of what is occurring. Government is supposed to restrain evil, not perpetuate it.
If justice isn’t applied equally to all, it’s not justice, but tyranny. If those in power are allowed to unconstitutionally wield the law as a cudgel, they will continue to do the same to anyone they consider an enemy. The real threat to their power isn’t Donald Trump, but people such as you and me. Those who love freedom are the last obstacle to their quest for absolute power.
And that’s way in two short years in office Biden has weaponized the FBI and the DOJ against parents and pro-lifers. It’s why Biden’s Pentagon has sought to weed out conservatives from the military. Imagine what the Biden administration would do with another four years in office.
As corruption abounds, we feel helpless. Yet when Habakkuk lamented about the lack of justice, God reminded him: “I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told.” Our hope isn’t in government, but in God.
