Like the Grinch who stole Christmas, “Wokeness” stole LIFE! That’s right; the longtime family game of LIFE now joins the ever-increasing ranks of “the woke.” Here’s a short list of headlines, naming only a few of those many institutions from all areas of life (foods, entertainment, religion, financial, military, history, etc.), that preceded LIFE in going woke. One of these articles accurately describes it as “trying to push our Nation towards a rule by minority.”

Lindsay Harold, in a Facebook post now gone viral, describes her experience with the new version of this old-time family favorite board game in disappointing terms, ending with “wokeness ruins everything.” Expecting a trip down memory lane as she taught her girls how to play their new Christmas present, it wasn’t her memory that failed her; it was the many changes that Hasbro adopted into the old Milton Bradley game, changes that align with the modern Marxist mentality that for decades has been bent on the destruction of what America’s founders, and many Americans today, held dear – family, Christian faith, and freedom.
I expect that someone is saying, “That’s too fantastical a statement. For crying out loud, it’s only a game.” I, also, wondered if I was overreaching, but then I remembered the children’s poem For Want of a Nail. It reminds us that “seemingly unimportant acts or omissions can have grave and unforeseen consequences.” (Wikipedia)
For want of a nail the shoe was lost.
For want of a shoe the horse was lost.
For want of a horse the rider was lost.
For want of a rider the message was lost.
For want of a message the battle was lost.
For want of a battle the kingdom was lost.
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.
The changes in this game only serve to solidify the indoctrination largely being taught in our schools, found in our media and entertainment, and let’s not forget that play is often used as one of the main forms of learning a thing, or at least normalizing it in our minds.
What is the “nail;” what are the “unimportant acts or omissions” that Hasbro has brought to this game, acts and omissions which, if not consciously battled, could result in the loss of a kingdom? For the sake of space, I’ll briefly mention them, but encourage you to read Lindsay’s well-written viral post.
1. The “peg people” are no longer limited by the scientific fact of two genders (blue and pink); you, your spouse, and your children can be whatever you want (blue, pink, red, purple, yellow, and green). FYI, pets are people too.
2. In pre-woke LIFE everyone got married and were monetarily rewarded for it. “Woke” LIFE let’s one choose whether to get married or not. If one chooses to marry, it costs them big bucks and the path to retirement is longer. In essence, one is penalized for getting married.
3. Traditionally, LIFE had many baby spaces, there was no limit to the number of children one could have, and each child rewarded the player with benefits in retirement. Yes, it reminds us that, as the Bible states, children are a blessing. This communist edition of LIFE allows one to choose marriage or no marriage, children or no children (regardless of marriage), one might choose children and have none or be limited to a total of four. According to Lindsay’s post, “wanting to have children not only costs you up front, but results in a longer path that delays you from reaching the end faster and getting a financial bonus.”
Her conclusion, as one who has played the older and this new version, in part, reads: “The new game sends a very different message. If you want to win this dystopian game of LIFE, it’s best to avoid marriage and children as they cost you and slow you down. You definitely can’t have a lot of kids. That’s not even an option. There’s no reason marriage and children have any connection to one another. Pets and friends are the same as a spouse or children. They’re all equally valid choices. The bottom line is only about money. Family just gets in the way of that. But if you really want them, it’s an option. Whatever. Your life, your way.”
With all the world around me going woke, what can I do?
As a Christian, I must remember that God alone is the source and sustainer of all life. I must never forget that I am in a spiritual battle and that Hasbro’s game of LIFE is not the enemy; it is simply a symptom, a fruit, of the enemy’s work within our culture and nation. That work is sin.
While Hasbro and others are woke to this world, I must constantly be awake to my heavenly calling, as given by Paul in I Corinthians 15:34. “Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.” When confronted with the lies that abound all around us, are we meeting them with Scriptural truth? Are we rightly wielding the sword of truth, which is the Word of God? Or have we grown weary and complacent, largely letting the world march on? R. Arthur Matthews offers a warning we should all take to heart. “The thing that we need to be afraid of today is that the spirit that produces world trends should invade Christ’s mighty army and argue us off the offensive into a compromised coexistence with the world’s attitudes.” Or as Jesus warned in Matthew 24:12, “And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.”
In this life, as long as the Lord gives us life, let us draw our strength from God, seeking His wisdom and resting in Him as we strive to stay true in the spiritual battle to which we’ve been called. “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness.” (Eph. 6:10, 14)
