It may have been the best of times and the worst of times in Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities, but the Finnish of our tale today comes with the reward of morality being turned upon its head. Join me as we learn the “Tale of Two Women,” both having taken part in Finland’s government and join me in prayer for favorable outcomes.
Why does what is happening in Finland matter to American readers? Because the question of free speech and Christianity are at stake, and because when one believer suffers, we all suffer. Beyond that, these things have a ripple effect we will most likely feel and, as the Spirit leads, the issues addressed here should make their way to our prayer list.
Much of the information and quotes below come from an article published by Well Versed World. The whole of the article can be read here.
One Finnish woman: “Sanna Marin was the Prime Minister of Finland from 2019 until only two months ago, June 20, 2023. In 2019, at age 34, she became the youngest head of state in the world. Raised in what she called a ‘rainbow family,’ her ‘parents’ consisted of two women…
“…While in office, she threw raucous parties complete with topless women involved in highly suggestive poses. When confronted, she responded (regarding whomever posted them) that taking and posting the pictures was ‘inappropriate.’ She did not admit that the actual behavior was ‘inappropriate.’ So promiscuous were her parties that people demanded that, while the Prime Minister, she be drug tested. She openly talked about her alcohol consumption but swore she did nothing illegal.”
More of her antics can be read in a New York Post article from last year.
Her end: She no longer serves as Prime Minister, having been voted out of office during the last election.
Pray: That former Prime Minister Sanna Marin will be saved by Jesus Christ and that she will raise her daughter in the fear of the Lord.
Another Finnish woman: Päivi Räsänen, a godly woman who is the former Minister of the Interior and has been a Member of Parliament in Finland for 28 years. She is a medical doctor and married to a Lutheran pastor who is also the President of a Bible College.
“On social media, in a post to the Bishop of her denomination, she quoted Scripture. She cited Romans 1:24-27 which states, ‘24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen. 26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.’
“For quoting Scripture, she has been repeatedly interrogated by the police. She was taken to trial. She was found not guilty. Unhappy with the verdict, the prosecutor is dragging her back into hearings again, costing huge sums of money for legal representation.”
I would urge my readers to learn more about this incredible spiritual battle reported on in the Christian Post here.
Her end: It’s yet to be determined, but the possibility of heavy fines or prison are not out of the question, all because she spoke the truth regarding gender, sexuality, and its appropriate place in society – all according to Biblical principles. The Washington Times reported that she “may not know until the end of November whether the country’s court of appeals will sustain their 18-month-old acquittal on hate-crime charges.”
Pray: 1. That Päivi Räsänen will find favor in the eyes of the court and that she will remain strong. 2. Pray that believers and non-believers alike will understand the great importance of free speech both in Finland and the United States. 3. Pray that Finland will once more align itself with the cross of Christ which graces their national flag. 4. Pray that America will embrace her own Christian heritage before all is lost.
To hear an interview where Päivi Räsänen is brilliantly defending free speech, her Biblical stance, results from this persecution, and some sober words of warning click here. This 23-minute speech will be a strong encouragement to those who will take the time to listen.
This is a battle for decency, it’s a battle for religious freedom. Allow me to close with some of her recent comments prior to her last court hearing:
“The contents of my writings and speeches represent the classical Christian conception of marriage and sexuality, which is the same that Christian churches have taught for two thousand years. I entirely reject the allegation that I have defamed, threatened, or insulted anyone, and language of that sort has not been included in my statements.
“I have emphasized that every human being has been created in the image of God and human rights belong to everyone. The Bible’s teaching is, however, clear, that sexual relations outside marriage are against God’s will, as are same-sex relationships. I will not back off from this viewpoint. At the same time, I have emphasized that every one of us is sinful in front of God. The solution to sin is not denying its reality but accepting God’s grace though Jesus’ redemptive sacrifice.
“I trust that the whole process is in God’s hands and has a purpose. I am glad that this trial has led to a public discussion about the Bible in our society. I am prepared to defend freedom of expression and faith at all necessary levels of justice, even, if necessary, before the Supreme Court of Finland and thereafter the European Court of Human Rights.”
Member of Parliament of Finland
Päivi Räsänen
Dear Reader, I urge you to watch the video above, be emboldened to stand for truth, and use some of Päivi Räsänen’s talking points regarding the “classical Christian conception of marriage and sexuality.” Public schools no longer teach it (generally speaking), entertainment mostly does not endorse it, and the government promotes an ideology which runs diametrically opposed to it. I cannot over-emphasize the importance of purposefully speaking into your children/grandchildren on this topic. It’s likely that the above influences and many of their friends are a loud voice of deception; may ours be a voice of concern, love, truth, and warning. Such conversations must be preceded, bathed, and followed up with earnest prayer.
