Justice Thomas Clarence Thomas has been making the news much lately, as well he should. Whether it’s his Second Amendment Opinion (which can be read here), his vote to overturn Roe v Wade followed by threats of protest outside his home, or his controversial statement after Roe was overturned – “In future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell” (contraception, same-sex relationships and same-sex marriages), Justice Thomas is continuing to take bold and constitutional stands for which we are grateful.
If you’re like me, you’ll want to know “what makes this man tick?” Join us this Thursday, June 30 at 1:00 PM at American Decency Association (203 E Main Street, Fremont) for the film Justice Thomas – “in his own words”. Please help us spread the word through social media, sharing this email, and word of mouth. Watch a trailer for it here.
Here’s a taste of what you’ll expect to see: (on Thursday at ADA)
Born into dire poverty in the segregated South and abandoned by his father as a child, Justice Clarence Thomas triumphed over seemingly insurmountable odds to become one of the most influential justices on the Supreme Court. Yet after three decades of honorable service, few know him beyond his contentious confirmation and the surrounding media firestorm.
With unprecedented access, the producers interviewed Justice Clarence Thomas and his wife, Virginia (Ginny), over many months. Justice Thomas tells his entire life’s story, speaking frankly to the audience. After a brief introduction, the documentary combines Justice Thomas’ first person account with a rich array of historical archive material, period and original music, personal photos, and evocative recreations. “Created Equal” takes the viewer through his complex and often painful life, dealing with race, faith, power, jurisprudence, and personal resilience.
In his 27 years on the court, Thomas’s jurisprudence has often been controversial—from his brand of originalism to his decisions on hot button topics. Critical journalists often point out that he rarely speaks in oral argument.
The public remains curious about Clarence Thomas—both about his personal history and his judicial opinions.
