Before the January 6 Committee show-trial even began, the real purpose for the hearings has been clear. It’s not about discovering the truth of what actually happened on January 6 – but its main purpose is to paint Donald Trump as an insurrectionist and prevent him from ever becoming president again. Liz Cheney actually admitted that was their goal in a Face the Nation interview on CBS in January, stating: “I can tell you that the single most important thing, though, is to ensure that Donald Trump is not the Republican nominee and that he certainly is not anywhere close to the Oval Office ever again.”
With a looming red wave in the upcoming midterms, Democrats are desperately trying to turn the nation’s attention toward an event that took place a year and a half ago, and away from the mess the Biden administration has made sending the nation into a recession.
This one-sided, sham “investigation” has disregarded any pretense of fairness and truth – from the abandonment of long-held investigative hearing practices to the blatant manipulation of evidence. Pelosi stacked the committee with only anti-Trumpers; they’ve only called witnesses to support their false narrative, including hearsay testimony, and then don’t pursue any cross examination; and have even doctored evidence. When text messages exonerated Trump from the committee’s accusations of inciting insurrection, the committee doctored the texts to make them appear incriminating.
Then there was the “emergency” J-6 committee hearing scheduled for last week. Breathlessly Democrats told us to expect shocking bombshell testimony. It was a bombshell alright – one that exploded in their own faces.
The testimony that was supposed to put a nail in the coffin of Donald Trump came from Cassidy Hutchinson, a 25-year-old, low level aide to Trump’s former chief of staff, Mark Meadows. After solemnly pledging to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, Hutchinson testified that she “was told” by Deputy Chief of Staff Tony Ornato that after leaving the peaceful rally on January 6, President Trump lunged at a Secret Service agent and attempted to grab the steering wheel of the presidential limo because he wanted to join the protesters at the Capitol. She also claimed that Trump then assaulted the chief of his Secret Service detail, Bobby Engel, who had tried to restrain him.
All of this paints Trump as out of control, attempting to foment an insurrection at the Capitol. The only problem with Hutchinson’s testimony is that none of it is true. Ornato, who was not with Trump at the time, has reportedly denied telling Hutchinson what she testified to. In addition, Bobby Engel, who was with Trump, has strongly denounced Hutchinson’s story as untrue and is willing to testify under oath that the events she described never happened.
But the J-6 committee won’t call Engel to testify because it doesn’t fit their narrative. Instead of bringing before the committee those who were actually there that day, they instead allow hearsay testimony that would never be allowed in actual court of law.
As John Lucas writes at The Federalist: Hutchinson had no first-hand knowledge about what happened in the vehicle. Her testimony about the events in the vehicle was unreliable hearsay, untested and unverified by the slightest pretense of any cross-examination. In fact, it was double hearsay because Hutchinson claims that she heard it from Ornato, who supposedly heard it from someone else, presumably Engel. Such rank hearsay never would be admitted in a judicial proceeding precisely because of its lack of reliability.
Her testimony was just another hoax in a long line of lies by Democrats and the media to smear Donald Trump. As Richard Grenell, Trump’s former acting director of national intelligence, tweeted: “So a junior staffer was pressured by @Liz_Cheney to lie under oath. Why wasn’t there a single committee member asking her if she had proof? This performance collapsed in an hour.”
And in spite of the high-end production of this Soviet-style show trial, attempting to falsely paint January 6 as an insurrection with Trump as the main instigator, the American people aren’t buying it. According to the latest Harvard Caps/Harris poll, a majority of voters believe the hearings are biased/partisan — including nearly 60% of independents. The poll also found that more than two-thirds of voters think the hearings further divide the country as opposed to healing it, and 63% of voters feel Congress should be focusing on other issues.
And Donald Trump may have the last laugh after all. In Yahoo/YouGov’s most recent hypothetical 2024 matchup poll, Trump beat Biden. A year ago, Biden had been leading Trump by 9 points. So despite all the anti-Trump outrage from Democrats and the complicit mainstream media, Trump’s position against Biden has only improved. In fact, in a delicious irony, the latest survey from the Harvard-CAPS Harris Poll, reveals that Donald Trump has higher favorability ratings than any other American politician.
Yet the opinions of the American people won’t stop those on the Left from continuing to undermine the truth in order to advance their agenda. Lawmakers who have taken an oath to uphold the Constitution, make a mockery of the rule of law.
How can we expect justice when those wielding it are so corrupt? The more difficult question to understand is why are evildoers allowed to prosper? We certainly aren’t the first to ask that question; it’s been asked by every generation of believers – Job (Job 21:7), David (Psalm 10) Asaph (Psalm 73), Jeremiah (Jer. 12). Habakkuk’s cry could be our own: “O Lord, how long shall I cry for help …the law is paralyzed, and justice never goes forth. For the wicked surround the righteous; so justice goes forth perverted.”
You can sense the despair in Habakkuk that we, too, easily feel when we focus on the deeds of the wicked. But that’s not where our focus should be, and God didn’t leave Habakkuk in despair either. The Lord answered Habakkuk, and gives us the same reply: “For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told. … For still the vision awaits its appointed time … If it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come … but the righteous shall live by faith.” (Habakkuk 1-2) The righteous shall live by faith, until our faith is made sight. In the meantime, God gives us a command with a promise in Psalm 37, “Fret not yourself because of evildoers. … For the Lord loves justice; he will not forsake his saints. They are preserved forever, but the children of the wicked shall be cut off.” God is doing a work in our days; His story is still unfolding – and while we don’t understand the intricacies of the plot, we do know the ending! In God’s timetable, justice delayed is not justice denied.
