A Bold Stand for Life – and your action needed!

By: Lisa Van Houten

Please express your deep gratitude to Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker for boldly upholding the rule of law and Michigan’s ban on abortion – in the face of immense opposition!  Read below for the details and a way to show your appreciation.

Michigan Kent County prosecutor, Chris Becker, said he will enforce Michigan’s pro-life law that bans the killing of the unborn through abortion, in spite of pressure brought to bear by Michigan’s Democratic Attorney General, Dana Nessel.

Michigan’s 1931 law which bans abortion was superseded by Roe v. Wade.  Although, the Michigan law is still on the books and was never rescinded, so with the overturning of Roe, that law should have gone back into effect.

However, in a suit brought by Planned Parenthood of Michigan, state judge Elizabeth Gleicher, who is an outspoken proponent of abortion and regularly donates to Planned Parenthood, was egregiously allowed to preside over the case – and to the surprise of no one, recently temporarily blocked enforcement of the 1931 law which bans abortion in Michigan and allows for the prosecution of doctors who perform abortion.

However, attorney Dave Kallman, who has a wealth of experience in defending constitutional issues, believes county-level prosecutors still may enforce Michigan’s pro-life law.  He stated: “If there’s any prosecutor in this state right now today, and the police came to them with a investigation showing a doctor performed an abortion in violation of the statute, a prosecutor could prosecute right now — today — if they wanted to.”

One of those courageous prosecutors is Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  Read his strong statement below which upholds the law of the land and the constitutional authority of each branch of government.

“I do not believe it proper for me to simply ignore a law, any law, that was passed by the Michigan Legislature and signed by the Governor. In our system of government, the legislature passes a law, and the executive branch, including prosecutors, enforces those laws. I have always held it would be improper for me to pick and choose the laws I wish to enforce that have been validly passed and signed. I will not start now. To dispel any confusion about the law, MCL 750.14 does not allow for charges to be filed against the woman seeking or getting an abortion. It only allows for charges to be filed against the doctor performing an abortion.

“…I will abide by whatever laws are passed by the legislature or by voter initiative down the road.  That is the proper role of a prosecutor. At this time, however, there is a validly passed statute which has been upheld by the Court of Appeals in the past and I will not turn a blind eye and ignore it. To do so in my opinion would be improper.”

We believe his strong stance is already making an impact and saving lives!  A friend of this ministry who regularly prays in front of the abortion provider in Grand Rapids noted that after Chris Becker’s statement was released, there was no activity or signs of staff coming to the abortion facility!

Prosecutor Chris Becker will be under immense pushback from pro-abortionists.  It’s vital that he hears from those of us who appreciate his stance!  Take a moment to thank and encourage Mr. Becker for upholding the law in the face of fierce criticism.
