Let’s NOT Go Brandon!

There are many questionable things which are so popular in the world today that Christians forget to question; they just get swept along with the crowd and participate in them without asking, “What does the Bible say about this?”

I was surprised several years ago at the response FROM THE CHURCH when certain books or television shows were questioned by me or others. These means of entertainment were things which God has expressly told His people not to have anything to do with. Yet, because it appealed to their senses, large segments of the church clung to that which was evil, attacked those who questioned the practices, and left the world with a vision of Christianity that looked much like its own life.

We are meant to be a witness to the world by being separate, touching not the unclean thing, and being holy as God is holy. Too often, the “believer’s” life, words, entertainments, and reactions resemble the world around them instead of the holy God they say they serve. This should cause us to pause and think. Does this glorify God (I Cor. 10:31)? Can this be done in the name of the Lord Jesus (Col. 3:17)? Does this allow me to walk worthy of my vocation as a Christian (Eph. 4:1; Col. 1:10; I Thess. 2:12)? After all, our lives are to reflect the Light of Christ and point others to God. Are we doing this or are we lifting up our own desires above His?

It’s easy to get swept up in things; the following isn’t an indictment so much as a call to think.

“Let’s go, Brandon” is an anti-Biden chant that is sweeping the country. It originated at a NASCAR race when a reporter misinterpreted vulgar profanity being yelled at Joe Biden.

At first glance, it’s amusing. But should Christians really be using this phrase?

Tony Perkins of Family Research Council (FRC) shared his thoughts on radio; in part he said, “This seemingly humorous chant is not something Christians can or should support. It demeans the office and further undermines the strength of our form of government, but most importantly it violates the teaching of Scripture. The Bible instructs us to pray for those in leadership, not curse them with profanity. Look, I understand the frustration with this president and his failed policies that are wrecking the economy, endangering the nation, attacking our freedoms and undermining the family. I get it. But that does not negate the instruction of God’s word: 1 Timothy 2 ‘Therefore I exhort first of all those supplications, prayers, intercessions, [and] giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.’”

Beyond that, let’s not forget the words of Jesus. “Love your enemies, Bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you. (Matt. 5:44)” Although those who stand against us often use demeaning words and call us names, our response is to be different than theirs. As a matter of fact, we should expect to be mocked and mistreated. They, on the other hand, should expect to be treated with love and compassion. Truthfully, they often do not expect that; that conundrum is what makes Christ appealing to them or at least intrigues them.

Let us strive to live as Biblically as possible—ALL to the glory of God and the magnifying of our Lord Jesus Christ, by the power of His Holy Spirit.
