Yesterday (11/6/20), there was an early call from Freedom Works to freedom lovers to meet in downtown Detroit in response to the previous night’s reports of questionable vote counting procedures and the strange occurrences around the nation where people went to bed with President Trump leading in several key states only to awaken with former Vice President Biden now in the lead. After all, if President Trump was willing to stand and fight for the American people, the American people should stand up and fight for President Trump. So, peaceful protests were organized.
American Decency’s Bill Johnson and a staff member started the early morning trek to TFC (formerly Cobo Hall) where they were supposed to meet in order to protest the widespread reports of fraudulent vote counting.
Here is a troubling sample of what we have been hearing, sent to us by a trusted friend.
Having arrived at their destination they spoke with the general manager, discussing the events of the previous evening. As Bill asked searching questions the gentleman, apparently well-versed in diplomacy, was careful to leave the impression that there had been nothing to see here and subtly insinuated that there was no reason why Bill should be there today. In closing remarks the general manager pointed to a small gathering on the overpass across the street, stating that protesters usually gather over there.
On the overpass were gathered a wide variety of people—young/old, varying shades of color, many with signs others without, but all there for one common purpose—each concerned for America and each wanting to be sure that the election process is fair. Many were heard to say that they could accept an honest defeat of President Trump; but that there are just too many irregularities and questions—none of it made sense. There weren’t just protesters there either. A great number of local, state, and foreign reporters were also in attendance, each wanting to interview several people. France 24, ABC 7, FOX 2, VG TV (Norwegian), and Reuters are only a sampling of those eager to ask questions and each with their own beliefs of what is really taking place. A American Decency board member and her daughter were also present and can be seen in the background of VG TV’s video report.
One person who drew much attention was an elderly woman by the name of Elizabeth; perhaps a fairer statement is that her sign – “Socialism is not American” – received a lot of attention. She is an activist and a Christian who handled her interviews full of grace and truth. Some of the other people who were in attendance had been there the night before and shared details about what had happened.
There was at least one young man who showed up to represent BLM. Unfortunately his vocabulary seemed quite limited to swearing and yelling, having no interest in real conversation. Even more unfortunately, he managed to egg on a number of other people from the protest who chose to come down to his level with yelling, name-calling, and no ability to have real conversation. Gratefully, not all chose to mimic his behavior; but it would have been very interesting to see how things would have transpired if the young BLM man didn’t have anyone engage him in a mirroring manner.
Much more could be reported on, like the Trump Train that came through, some of the other signs that were present, or even the attitudes and emotions of those present; but instead, I want to direct a question and some thoughts to those of you who may have opportunity to join in some future protest or even in one to one conversations that you may have.
Bill had texted to all the staff; it started this way: “I am preparing spiritually and mentally and then physically to go to Detroit…Pray.” Dear Reader, are you preparing yourself spiritually and mentally to engage in important conversations with others? Are you readying yourself through prayer (and possibly fasting), being in the Word regularly, and seeking the leading of the Holy Spirit for conversations and situations that God will put you in? I encourage you to pray for those others you’ll be in contact with as well as for yourself.
When we have truth we can be bold and confident in that truth; but we needn’t yell, get agitated or angry, and forget that we are to walk in a manner worthy of our calling. When both parties are yelling it’s likely that neither is listening. Remember Proverbs 15:1, “A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.” It continues by teaching us that “The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness. The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good. A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.”
It’s important to stand and speak; it’s important to hold truth high. But of what good is the beauty of truth when one serves it up on a platter of angry pride and ugly words. Let us remember that God lifts up the humble and casts the pride-filled down as we “Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time. Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.” (Colossians 4:5-6)
