Unmasking Mask Privilege

By: Steve Huston

We’ve all heard of “white privilege” or “black privilege,” but it’s important that we take a look at the “mask privilege” that is prevalent everywhere today. It’s vital that we look to see what is under the mask as well. A mask is much more than a mask; what is hiding behind it? Most importantly, as a freedom loving Christian, what should my response be to this whole situation?

On the first day of Michigan’s “mask mandate,” given by Governor Whitmer, I tried to take my daughter to Burger King for breakfast, only to have the manager tell me she couldn’t serve us because we weren’t wearing masks. I expected that. BUT THE FRUSTRATING PART WAS: 1) She was wearing her own mask incorrectly (under her nose) and 2) She kept telling me she completely agreed with me as I politely, calmly, and rationally explained that Executive Orders (EO) aren’t laws, the ineffectiveness of masks, the potential dangers from wearing masks, the freedoms that are at stake by complying with tyranny; and yes, I could have ordered and gotten my food for as long as it took me to explain all these things to her—without my mask. She also informed me that the Fremont PD said they would be enforcing these unconstitutional orders. IF she completely agreed with me, she would serve ALL customers, instead of showing “mask privilege.”

To be clear, I was not rude and neither was she. I explained to her (and others throughout the day) that I was not angry with them but that there is something larger at stake. Here, the warning of Ronald Reagan fits perfectly:The air we breathe is also invisible and taken for granted, yet if it is denied even for a few seconds, we realize instantly how much it means to us. Well, so, too, with freedom.

There are some who believe that nothing should be said to those who “are just doing their jobs;” after all, they have a family to feed and bills to pay. “What choices do these stores have? After all, the governor is vindictive and will pull licenses.”

We need to be polite, yet honest. I understand that they are caught between a rock and a hard place. I sympathize with the individuals and the businesses that these governors are wrongly using to push her unconstitutional EOs; but at what point does one stop being a cog in the crushing wheel of tyranny? At what point do we care about freedom more than personal gain? Our founding fathers were willing to give up their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor; what, if anything, are we willing to give up? As a Christian, I feel for those in the crossfire; as one who loves liberty, I am frustrated at all those who uphold lawless edicts WHICH ARE NOT LAWS. Just because I have compassion for someone’s hard choice doesn’t change the fact that we should do the right thing just because it’s the right thing to do. Part of the right thing is helping others see the truth and that freedom is our only weapon. Part of the right thing is to not be a jerk whether you buy into masks or refuse them. But part of the right thing is to also be lawful which means to defend our constitutional rights instead of kowtowing to an overreaching, dictatorial governor, whether one is a business or an ordinary citizen.

We should all be offended by the line of thinking that says, “It’s my job; what can I do?” because it negates personal responsibility for ones actions. It’s offensive because our nation was built on self-governance; I am free to make choices but I am not free from the consequences of those choices, regardless the reasoning behind them. And we must ALL realize that the consequences of our actions do not happen in a vacuum. In other words, if we support unconstitutional actions, it affects ALL of us; dictators feel more empowered, our fellow citizens are encouraged to buy into the false fear that has been generated, and America’s freedoms are further stripped from our clenched fists—clenched because we are holding onto those freedoms like a drowning man holds onto the lifeline that has been thrown to him. Know this: as a nation, that lifeline IS OUR CONSTITUTION!

IN FOUR SHORT MONTHS WE HAVE BEEN TURNED INTO A SOCIALIST NATION FOR ALL PRACTICAL PURPOSES. In four short months those who live in the “land of the free and the home of the brave” have assimilated to guidelines that have no scientific premise whatsoever; because we have been overtaken by fear and we’ve been willing to trade in our freedom for a false feeling of safety. We’ve been told where we can and cannot go; who we can and cannot visit or allow into our homes; arbitrarily what we can and cannot buy; the distance we can be from one another; when and how we can worship; what businesses and workers are essential; we are being convinced to use a traceable card for everything instead of cash; and now, who we can and cannot sell to. If you do not wear a mask, you have no right to buy food, supplies, get your hair cut, go to the doctor, or any number of things. It is “mask privilege.” It is also against the law; it’s unconstitutional.

It’s also become popular among conservatives to hide behind the health exemption so they don’t have to hide behind a mask. I understand that there are real medical issues; but if you’re hiding behind such medical exemptions, know this; it only kicks the can down the road. The loophole you stick your neck in eventually becomes a noose. What happens when “mask privilege” becomes “vaccine privilege” or “microchip privilege?” How far will we allow the invasion of privacy or the stripping of our freedoms, before we stand and say, “No!”? It’s easier to push back against a sapling than it is to overcome a grown oak tree. If we will not stand against a government that is flexing muscles that are not their own, we help that sapling become the mighty oak.

As we’ve seen dictatorial governors supported by a feckless legislature and a Marxist sympathizing judiciary rise up, we may soon see that they have been able to make mask wearing (vaccines, microchipping, etc.) into “law.” It would be an illegal law, seeing as our Constitution protects us against these attacks upon our God-given freedoms; but it could happen. Read this introduction from Frederic Bastiat’s The Law: “The law perverted! And the police powers of the state perverted along with it! The law, I say, not only turned from its proper purpose but made to follow an entirely contrary purpose! The law becomes the weapon of every kind of greed! Instead of checking crime, the law itself guilty of the evils it is supposed to punish!

If this is true, it is a serious fact, and moral duty requires me to call the attention of my fellow-citizens to it.

As Christians we must always show love; but be reminded of Patrick Henry’s frame of mind: “Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offense, I should consider myself as guilty of treason toward my country, and of an act of disloyalty toward the Majesty of Heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings.

Our government knows that a house divided against itself cannot stand; so they have been allowing and fomenting division among the people. This is just another step in doing so.

Instead of fearing (or standing against) a government who has, for all practical purposes, taken away our freedoms, we’re encouraged by that same government to fear our friends, neighbors, and family who will not wear a mask and blindly follow their orders. Instead of standing against the truly lawless, many are standing against and bullying those who stand for freedom because the government has convinced them that those who will not comply are lawless. It’s “mask privilege.”

Most of you already know the many arguments against masks and the inconsistent stand that those in authority have had when it comes to the necessity for masks. If not, here is a short video by Laura Ingraham (The Angle July 15, 2020). Also, some words by Patrick Colbeck who had desired to be Michigan’s governor: “Wearing face masks to prevent transmission of COVID-19 is like installing a chain link fence to keep flies out of your backyard. The COVID-19 virus is 125 nanometers. An N95 mask (i.e. “good” mask) screens out particles 300 nanometers or greater. The hankies most people wear don’t come close to even that level. So the question is….WHY the mandate, especially when death rate is flat? IMPEACH GOVERNOR WHITMER NOW! All it takes is ONE MI Representative to get the ball rolling.

At the very least we should be asking ourselves questions: Why have they changed from counting COVID deaths to now only counting “new cases?” With the proof that it’s not as deadly as we were first led to believe, why the mask mandate and constitutional overreach? We are also hearing many reports of “double-counting” COVID cases; why is it necessary to inflate numbers if it is really a pandemic? If your mask (vaccine, etc.) works, why is mine necessary? But the question we must always ask ourselves in the days to come is this: If someone in authority is acting unconstitutionally, if they are trying to steal my freedoms—WHY? Where are they leading us? What is the goal behind their stated goal? We mustn’t hang up our critical thinking skills or our independence at the COVID door, or any door.

As a patriot I leave you with the words of founding father Samuel Adams:If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.

As a Christian I plead with you to love truth; live in the compassion and compelling love of Christ; and make sure that you believe on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, being saved by His atoning work upon the cross. Live a life of holiness, studying God’s Word to know the difference between the holy and the profane. Finally, share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with others as strongly as you are standing against/or for the masks. Let no mask nor man muffle or hinder your proclamation of the Good News!

We are grateful to God that He has moved on the hearts and minds of our friends, showing us a little of what is inside them. Your notes of encouragement, prayers, and financial support mean so much to us; without them, we wouldn’t be able to do the important work that God has laid upon us.

Won’t you prayerfully seek the Lord’s will to come alongside us again, supporting us in whatever manner you feel led? Thank you.
