Patrick Colbeck and Bill Johnson Zoom Together!

Zoom with us tomorrow (Tuesday, April 28, 2020 at 7:00 PM) as ADA’s Bill Johnson and former Michigan Senator Patrick Colbeck discuss the issues of our day, particularly in regard to Governor Whitmer’s executive orders, her unconstitutional overreach, how her decisions affect our economy, what things we can do as citizens to stop her, and any number of other cutting edge discussions. There will even be an opportunity for you to ask your own questions.

This is sure to be a fascinating conversation as Mr. Colbeck has a keen mind for politics, ran in the Republican primary for governor in the last election, and desires to see the lawful protection of and continued implementation of the Constitution, and, as a Christian, all these things to the glory of God.

As we’ve been deemed and divided into “essential” and “non-essential” working individuals; as churches and businesses have been ordered to close down; as the constitutional rug of liberty has been whooshed out from under our feet; we’ve all been left feeling a little up in the air, a little down in the dumps, and reminded to keep our eyes and heart focused on God—the real Authority in all this.

I have often wondered how Mr. Colbeck would have handled this crisis. Recognizing that each state has its own issues, would he have acted in like fashion with the governors of Arkansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Wyoming, and Iowa, not issuing stay at home orders and asking for their citizens to use good hygiene and common sense; or would he fall somewhere between them and the draconian tyrants that demand that their citizens fall into lock step?

I believe I know the answer to this when considering the fact that Patrick is a statesman, not a politician. In his book, Wrestling Gators, he writes, “My priorities put the people at the top because Article I, Section 1 of the Michigan Constitution reads, ‘All political power is inherently in the people. Government is instituted for their equal benefit, security and protection’ (emphasis mine).”

Later on he writes that government officials need to play their position. “The Constitution is very clear. The legislative branch makes laws. The executive branch executes laws. The judicial branch issues opinions on court cases.

“If the Constitution says, ‘all legislative powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress,’why does Congress sit on its hands when people say that Supreme Court decisions are the ‘law of the land’? Why do we allow Presidents to unilaterally change the provisions of a law as President Obama did multiple times with his signature legislation Obamacare? Why is Congress allowed to color outside the lines of its enumerated powers defined in Article I Section 8 of the Constitution?”

Patrick Colbeck believes in limited government and what he applies to the federal government I am sure that he would say the same for our state government as well.
