America’s New Civil War

“Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal..

“Now we are engaged in a great civil war,testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure.”

These are the opening words of Lincoln’s famous Gettysburg Address. These are words that point to America’s foundation of Liberty and equality. These are words that remind us that we are not a perfect nation; and a reminder that when we move from Biblical foundations and Constitutional principles we find ourselves at a nexus of division, bloodshed, and destruction.It’s a reminder that when we turn away from liberty and justice for all, we turn to tyranny and injustice—the experiences that caused America’s founding fathers to safe-guard and protect our God-given rights and to promote self-governance.

America’s enemies are many today; China, Iran, and a plethora of globalist nations number more than a few. The vast number of enemies from within that would shred our Constitution and destroy our freedoms, however, seem to be even greater. Today, as in Lincoln’s time, “we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether [this] nation…can long endure.” The Red-Green Axis (Communist/Islamic enemies) from without have infiltrated our institutions, indoctrinated many segments of our society, and have thereby become strengthened—misusing our own laws and people against us—as enemies within as well.

With many of the institutions that made America great, having either fallen or seemingly on the verge thereof, one of America’s founding fathers explains why, and also how to regain that which we have lost.

Read the words of Patrick Henry as he spoke regarding the War for Independence:

“Whether this will prove a blessing or curse, will depend upon the use our people make of the blessings which a gracious God hath bestowed on us. If they are wise, they will be great and happy. If they are of a contrary character, they will be miserable. Righteousness alone can exalt them as a nation. Reader, whoever thou art, remember this; and in thy sphere practice virtue thyself, and encourage it in others.”

To live in pride, greed, immorality, and ignoring the precepts of God has not worked well for this nation; it’s weakened us and brought us to where we are now. Neither is it enough for us to only preach, teach, and talk holiness; we must faithfully walk in its God-given precepts. Virtue IS strength and moral character.We must get back to that way of life; for it is there that we will find true happiness and peace. It is Biblical living that affords us true liberty and justice for all.

George Washington called the American people to such virtuous living in his First Inaugural Address, “There exists in the economy and course of nature, an indissoluble union between virtue and happiness, between duty and advantage, between the genuine maxims of an honest and magnanimous policy, and the solid rewards of public prosperity and felicity: Since we ought to be no less persuaded that the propitious smiles of heaven, can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right, which heaven itself has ordained: And since the preservation of the sacred fire of liberty, and the destiny of the Republican model of government, are justly considered as deeply, perhaps as finally staked, on the experiment entrusted to the hands of the American people.”

Much American blood has been shed in the protecting of this nation and its Biblical and Constitutional ideals that ALL men are created equal; ALL men are deserving of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; and ALL men are responsible for governing themselves. From the War of Independence, to the Civil War, to the World Wars and beyond, Americans have fought and died to protect, promote, and pass on the torch of liberty. Should we fail now in this dark hour; if this light is snuffed out and communism reigns, then the dead have died in vain and their spilled blood is laid waste. Yet, many of them would shout, “It was not wasted; for it was worth the price of one more day’s freedom!”

As I close with Lincoln’s final words given at Gettysburg, remember that what happens next is on our shoulders. Will we stand for truth, justice, and the Biblical ideals put forth in this “Grand Experiment” called America or will we allow the light of Liberty to go out on our watch? How we live and encourage others to live; how we vote; and what we allow, will determine the course of this great nation.

“…that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
