When Opportunity Arrives in a Taxi Cab

Throughout the month of May, the American Decency Association brought the former terrorist (now Christian), Kamal Saleem to many various churches and community group meetings throughout the state of Michigan. Besides all of the positive feedback and comments of thanks and encouragement, one of the biggest blessings that came from that time was getting to hear the story of Shawn and her Muslim taxi driver.

Shawn and her husband came to our event in Fremont, but it wasn’t her first time seeing Kamal speak. In fact, that’s where the story began.

After hearing him the first time, the couple looked for opportunities to share the love of Jesus with Muslims in their community. But there was a problem: they couldn’t find any. So, they prayed that God would give them that chance, and then Shawn went on a business trip to Chicago.

When her meeting was done, she called for a cab and who would be driving that cab but a Nigerian Muslim woman with two kids who stayed in a small apartment all day in a bad part of Chicago, waiting for their mother to get home so that she could occasionally take them to the park?

Shawn could tell this young mother was struggling and asked her if she could pray for her in the name of Jesus. Here was the opportunity she and her husband had been asking the Lord for! When they arrived at the airport and her prayer was done, she felt a tug on her heart and was compelled to do something that would strike most of us as extreme: she asked this young, Muslim, Nigerian taxi driver and her two kids to come visit her farm for a week during her own vacation.

That was a few years ago; now the taxi driver and her kids are a part of the family. They visit on weekends and holidays and spend their vacations on the farm. Best of all, they’ve come to know the One True God.

It is truly heartwarming to see how God’s love can change lives. It is evidence of the need that the Muslims we see on American streets have for the saving power of Jesus, and how God uses His people to bring his children to Himself.
