Stepping Up!

By: American Decency Staff

By now many of our readers have probably heard the good news that Peter Meijer, owner of the venue where the Drag Syndrome show was to be held, has decided that “after deep reflection on the nature of Drag Syndrome's performance, I cannot approve of their use of Tanglefoot's facilities.”

We’re grateful for the stand that Mr. Meijer is taking even though he claims he makes this decision “from a content neutral basis.” The promotion of sexualization and the mis-sexualization of any people—especially the “differently-abled”—is not art; it’s an attempt to normalize perversion and it is sin.

As C.S. Lewis in Mere Christianity wrote, “It seems, then, we are forced to believe in a real Right and Wrong. People may be sometimes mistaken about them, just as people sometimes get their sums wrong, but they are not a matter of mere taste and opinion any more than the multiplication table.” Although some declare that art is supposed to push lines, or even cross lines, it doesn’t change the fact that sin is sin and that sin has devastating effects upon a community and its people.

DisArt’s response wasn’t unexpected; they were “angered” and promised to find another venue to push this perversion upon West Michigan and its good citizens. There are many forms of art which could showcase the talents of those with Down syndrome; why choose this one? The answer is simple, to push an agenda. To read the promotion of this show proves the agenda behind it: Don’t miss this opportunity to hear from and talk to the artists, producers, and organizers involved in this unprecedented event which promises to replace and rearrange our assumptions about gender, sexuality, and disability.”

It’s possible that some of the sponsors were unaware of what would be presented in the name of “art.” Then we urge you to contact them and let them know that their support of this abuse of individuals and intended abuse of the community is unacceptable. Step up and click here to let them know!

One of the DisArt organizers, Chris Smit, is a professor at Calvin College. Yes, you read that right. Why is a Christian college tied to this event? Good question, we urge you to contact the President of Calvin College, Dr. Michael K Le Roy, expressing your deep concerns regarding this issue and to copy your letter to one of its board members, Allan Hoekstra. Or call President LeRoy at 616-526-6100.  We must remember that our contact should show Christian charity and concern.

Continue to pray that God will move upon the hearts and minds of the sponsors, the organizers, and the performers as well.
