Mr. President, do NOT sign the immigration bill!

By: American Decency Staff

Yet again we find ourselves on the brink of a potential government shutdown—so called. Although there are good people on both sides of the question: should President Trump sign the Continuing Resolution? We stand with Frank Gaffney, Sandy Rios, Daniel Horowitz, and others in saying, “Mr. President, do NOT sign the immigration bill!

There are many reasons that it makes sense to NOT sign the bill and if the American public were to rightly understand what is being offered, my guess is that most would agree.

One of the first reasons the President shouldn’t sign this Continuing Resolution is because the Democrats dumped a bill containing 1,169 pages onto his desk giving him no time to read it, understand the consequences of it, and decide wisely if it’s in the best interest of the American people or not. First, we remember how well that worked out with Obama-care (“We need to pass it to see what’s in it!”—We would never do that with buying a car or a house.) Secondly, Scripture warns us of acting rashly in decision making. Proverbs 18:13 tells us that only a fool decides without knowing the whole story and it brings him to shame.

A sensible answer to sign or don’t sign was proposed by Freedom Caucus member Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) who introduced a short-term continuing resolution to keep the government open while giving members of Congress an extra week to read through the deal. Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) agreed, saying, “It would be irresponsible to vote on a 1,000+ page bill dealing with our border security without due diligence.”

Although we are not sure of all that is in this “deal,” we are aware of several things which should bring anyone who cares about America’s safety and future to say, “No, I will NOT sign this bill.” Here are a few summarized problems:

There are serious amnesty/sanctuary provisions snuck into the spending bill.

-The bill DOES expand Catch and Release by reducing the number of border beds from 49,060 to 40,520

-Expands the Alternatives to Detention program from 82,000 to 100,000… so instead of housing family units at the border- they get moved into the interior where they almost always stay in the country permanently.

-$3.4 billion in refugee assistance – $74 million more than last year

-$4.4 billion in international disaster assistance – $100 million more than last year

There’s amnesty, catch-and-release is expanded, there’s more money for foreign aid than there is for a wall, and the fence funding that is included is severely limited. Conservative Review’s Daniel Horowitz puts it this way: “Trump has options besides this dumpster fire Swamp deal to build the wall and secure the border, and he doesn’t need to declare a national emergency to get the job done. Conservatives must demand that Trump veto the border deal.”

Here are a few articles people can read to get a better view of what this crisis entails.

House Freedom Caucus tries to buy time for Trump, because the border ‘deal’ is worse than you thought

Another good article not on the ‘deal’ but on why border control is so very important

What it really boils down to is this: Are we so fearful that we want this continuing resolution passed at the expense of compromising the reality of what it does to border security, American safety, and the state of our nation? We urge you to stop right now and pray for our president. Now that you’ve prayed, we urge you to call (White House comments 202-456-1111) or emailPresident Trump telling him that we want him to stand strong for us. (Below is a sample letter that you can copy and paste into the above email link or feel free to write your own.)

Below is some verbiage you may want to include in your interaction with President Trump:

Dear Mr. President,

I’m writing to urge you: do NOT sign the proposed immigration bill.  I encourage you to heed the counsel from the Freedom Caucus and other strong conservative voices who are warning about the hidden landmines within the legislation.

The nearly 1,200 hundred page bill was written behind closed doors and is being forced through before legislators even have a chance to read it.  Once again Speaker Pelosi is pushing “to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it.”

What we do know so far is that the bill will enable state and even local officials to veto construction of any further border barriers, which will be used to undermine your presidency and our security.  The bill will also expand catch and release, has provisions for amnesty, and includes more money for foreign aid than there is for a wall.

With large numbers of illegal immigrants—many of them empowered by drug cartels—this is a national crisis!  The safety of American citizens, trafficked women and children, and those defending our border is in your hands and we respectfully urge you to keep your promise.

This issue raises the stakes of the importance of your Presidency!   You are the only person standing between American sovereignty and lawlessness.

I am prayerfully asking God to protect you and bless you as you continue to courageously go against those who always capitulate and bow to the immense pressure from the Left, putting their careers ahead of the well-being of the nation and its citizens.

I urge you to continue to stand against the forces of evil, defend our national sovereignty, and protect the security of the American people.

Sincerely,
