Preventive Parenting Against Pornography

By: American Decency Staff

Pornography is no longer relegated to a hidden stash amongst a dad’s or uncle’s belongings; instead, it seemingly pops up in every corner of the internet. It’s much easier to become dirtied and/or addicted during today’s digital explosion, where many of all ages have access to the internet, potentially tripping over Pandora’s Box of dirty pictures, videos, or even live feed. Take notice; it’s no longer, “What will I do IF my child comes across pornography?” It’s, “What should I do NOW for WHEN my child comes across pornography?” The American Decency Association cares about you and those young people in your sphere of influence; we want you to be armed and prepared to fight the battle which will inevitably come to a screen near you!

What people put before their eyes matters! Because this is such a vital issue and a real battle for the eyes and minds of young and old alike, clear your calendar for this date. Don’t let anything keep you from joining us on Friday, March 23 at 7 PM (203 E. Main St, Fremont – American Decency building). Protect Young Eyes (PYE) will be here to give a masterful presentation on how to best protect your young person from the dangers of this digital age. Registration will be limited to the first 135 people to sign up; so click herenow to register and guarantee your place!

When the AFA Journal (March 2018) asked Chris McKenna (leader of PYE), “What exactly does PYE do?” He said, “We are currently a clearinghouse for the best information that is available, primarily for faith-based parents, but really for anybody who wants to protect their kids. We profile, test, and recommend the best resources.

I [also] lead a team of five speakers who travel the country speaking to kindergartners through 12th-graders, parents, and teachers [at schools, churches, and in communities] about how to redeem technology for good. We are not advocates for bubble wrapping kids, nor are we advocates for letting them figure it out. We are advocates for intentional, redemptive use of technology that can bring glory to God and positivity to our relationships and our own hearts.”

It’s hard to imagine, but with screens everywhere and even unwanted images bombarding those screens, first-time encounters with pornography are catching children at younger and younger ages. Kindergarten is not too young to warn (delicately) or have age-appropriate conversations. It’s important to be proactive, yet not harmful. Books like Good Pictures Bad Pictures and Good Pictures Bad Pictures jr. put out by Protect Young Minds is a great place to start. You can find these books and much more information at www.PROTECTYOUNGMINDS.ORG. And attending this seminar on Friday, March 23 at 7 PM with Protect Young Eyes (PYE) is a great place to start too! To learn more about PYE, go to their website at www.protectyoungeyes.com.

What are a few of the practical parenting strategies given by PYE? They told the AFA Journal this:

·         Talk to your children about all of the awkward things that nobody talked to you about.

·         Know that there is no such thing as passive parenting in the digital age.

·         Be a conversational, loving, and intentional parent.

·         Look your kids in the eyes and ask them about what they are doing online.

·         Find a software solution that comes alongside your parenting. But remember, parental controls alone do not replace the need to be a parent.

This event will answer many questions about safety, protection, things to be aware of and watch out for. It’s sure to be a blessing to all who will attend. Registration for this important event on March 23 at 7 PM at the American Decency building will be limited to the first 135 people to sign up; so click here now and reserve your seat!

THE GOD WHO SPEAKS

On Friday, March 16, with showings at 1 PM and 7 PM, the American Decency Association will be presenting a documentary produced by the American Family Association. The God Who Speaks will be shown in our auditorium which is located at, 203 E Main Street, Fremont, Michigan.

This 90 minute documentary answers common objections about the Bible’s reliability and equips believers to confidently base their lives on the power of God’s Word. This film offers great insight into the authority of the Bible as some of the world’s most respected biblical scholars speak to its authority, inspiration, help, and divine authorship.
