The White House Takes Steps Towards Stronger Immigration Policy

By: American Decency Staff

On Sunday, the White House sent Congress a document entitled, “White House Immigration Principles and Priorities,” which detailed President Trump’s position in the ongoing immigration debate and presented the direction he hopes that debate will take.

In an accompanying letter to Congress, Trump explained that the document “outline[s] reforms that must be included as part of any legislation addressing the status of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients. Without these reforms, illegal immigration and chain migration, which severely and unfairly burden American workers and taxpayers, will continue without end."

Comprised of three segments, Border Security, Interior Enforcement, and Merit-Based Immigration System, the Principles and Priorities, in part, call for actions which the average citizen might be surprised are not already being taken. Things like: barring access to gang members, removal of those who have overstayed their visa, removal of illegal immigrants who are repeat offenders for drunk driving and rape, etc.

Federal laws—including immigration laws—are put in place for a purpose, for the protection of a nation’s citizenry and as a means of dealing with foreign nations and their nationals who desire to have various interactions with our country. For too long now, American Federal law has been lax in both its legal standards and in its implementation of the same.

President Trump, while running for office, promised to not only make America great again but also to prioritize her safety and her citizenry. Sunday’s announcement is an important step to fulfill these promises with one of the strongest “IMMIGRATION PRINCIPLES & POLICIES” documents this nation has ever seen.

Upon reading it, one may wonder why the previous administration hadn’t taken these protective measures for the sake of those whom they swore an oath to protect. But we can be grateful that these steps are now being taken and can pray that Congress will cooperate with the executive branch in this endeavor.

As with any policy, it’s only as good as its enforcement. Pray that all the federal branches will work together, that our Congress will work together for the good of our country, and that these Immigration Principles & Policies will be quickly put into effect and enforced.
