When we chose the title for our conference this Friday in Fremont and Saturday in Grand Rapids, The Sword of Truth or the Sword of Islam, we were thinking of the existential question facing our country and our society today: will we allow the violent ways of Islam to wriggle its way into our culture and government, or will we maintain the moral vision of Western civilization largely based on a Biblical standard?
But taking the question in our title another way, it gives a false sense of choice that many believers around the world don’t have.
For Christians in places like Eritrea and Iran and parts of the Sudan and areas controlled by ISIS, they choose the Sword of Truth AND get the sword of Islam.
That’s why it’s important for organizations like ours to share the truth about the threat facing our world that so few seem willing to talk about.
But it’s not enough to just talk about what’s happening OUT THERE in the political world or in the culture at large.
The church is supposed to be the antidote to the poisonous ideology of Islam, and we must address the reasons that we are failing at that.
To put it another way, Islam is only filling the vacuum left by a weak church.
That’s why we’ve asked Pastor Norm De Jong to speak at this fall conference. Pastor Norm has made a long and fruitful career of caring for the church in many diverse ways. He’s been a professor, a Christian school administrator, an author, a Pastor, and an interim pastor even serving internationally.
My own church was blessed enough to have him as our pastor for several years, and I can therefore affirm his clear-thinking and passion for the Truth.
But we also have ADA President Bill Johnson excited to share his message of how our sovereign God uses His people’s action to bring about His will. Bill particularly looks forward to sharing how God has used our ministry in the past, and our hopes of usefulness for the future.
