Everyone seems to have strong feelings about immigration. Even within the church there is a vast array of thoughts regarding this hot topic. Some feel it’s the Christian’s inherent and Biblical duty to support even illegal immigration, while others strongly believe that our government should take greater care in protecting our borders and strongly vetting those who would step foot into the “land of the free and the home of the brave.” Of course, most people fall somewhere in the middle of these two extremes.
Although tempting to go deeply into the many areas of immigration, we’ll only touch on them briefly. It’s our hope that you will use these thoughts as a springboard into the Bible (the WHOLE counsel of God), the Constitution (the Law of the Land and governing document which God has blessed us with), and to thought provoking discussions between yourself and others. Learn the truth and share it.
First, as a Christian, I need to recognize that there’s a vast difference between my individual responsibilities and those of the government which God has put in place. When we look at Scripture, is God speaking to an individual (you and I) or is He speaking to an institution (like the government or the church)? What are the responsibilities of each and have we looked at the bigger picture?
One example of the bigger picture:
Many Christians who support open immigration point to the verses which urge us to show kindness to the sojourner. But upon looking at the bigger picture, one finds that 1) these sojourners had permission to dwell in that land and 2) they first agreed to abide by the laws of the land (ONE law for the Israelite and the sojourner alike). Illegal immigrants, sanctuary cities and states, and a pathway to citizenship for illegal aliens—amnesty—deny this Biblical mandate and example of one law for all.
This is a very important point. How many of you have heard that all of our families were immigrants at one time? Yes, all of our families came from other lands and America has been known as the melting pot. But when our families came, it was for the purpose of assimilation not acquisition. The goal was to become Americans, submitting ourselves to American law and finding freedom under the Constitution of the United States of America. Many of these immigrants want to come here but hold on to Sharia law, a form of law which is in direct opposition to our Constitution and in opposition to the freedoms we hold dear.
When thinking of immigration or vetting of immigrants, it would behoove us to keep in mind a portion of Teddy Roosevelt’s letter he wrote to the American Defense Society in 1919, just three days before his death:
“In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American . . . There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have no room for but one flag, the American Flag . . . and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.”
Assimilation doesn’t mean giving up one’s ethnic traditions or cultural beliefs as long as they are neither detrimental to the country one is now hoping to call “home” nor against the laws of their new land—America. But it’s nothing short of acquisition when they try to force their own laws upon American courts or desire to have Sharia law overthrow Constitutional law.
Looking at Islamic immigration specifically (seeing as this is a major point of contention nowadays), one cannot deny or turn a blind eye toward “Hijra.” “Hijrameans migration and, according to Islam’s doctrines and its quietly acknowledged organizational strategies, the goal of migration today is not peaceful assimilation to the political system and mores of the host country. Instead, the goal is jihad by non-violent means—known as civilization jihad or Islamization.” (From the book “Refugee Resettlement and the Hijra to America” by Ann Corcoran. It can be freely downloaded or read here.) From ancient to contemporary times, this has been a way in which Islam has gained a foothold in and overtaken nations.
There are many organizations which are funding refugee resettlement and immigration to America. This is done with a nefarious purpose rather than with the benign and compassionate foot they put forward. “Behind the federal spending, behind the primary religious and secular refugee/immigrant aid contractors, is a nationwide network of advocacy groups buoyed by billions in taxpayer and leftwing foundation dollars, focused on what they call ‘culture shaping.’ These organizations are all dedicated to resettling as many non-U.S. citizens as possible, entrenching them in our cities and towns, helping them prosper and eventually become voting U.S. citizens, while simultaneously softening up our society to accept them with open arms. The ultimate goal is to reshape America in the ‘progressive’ mold, and most of these organizations admit it.” (From the book “The Red-Green Axis: refugees, immigration and the agenda to erase America” by James Simpson. It’s becoming increasingly evident that their goal is the erasure of America and the instituting of Islam – as we watch sanctuary cities, sanctuary states, and “No-go zones” pop up more prominently throughout the United States. As Christianity is being muffled and Islam is being taught in our schools; while Christianity is being prosecuted in our courts and Islamic law gives freedom to law-breakers; while Christianity is attacked and blamed and Islam is heralded and excused; while truth is being drowned out by “progressive” parties, politicians, and social justice warriors; former President Obama’s promise to “fundamentally transform America” is just around the corner unless God should intervene. We are hoping that this administration is one of the means of divine intervention.
Another point to consider is the belief that anyone who gets into this country by any means should have Constitutional protections and rights given to them. No, these rights are guaranteed for citizens of the United States of America rather than anyone who would like to claim them. Consider also Article 4 section 4 of our Constitution: “The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republic Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion…” With a federal government that has tried to force invasion through resettlement, each state should stand up for its sovereign rights and refuse such forced immigration.
And finally, we have an immigration law that already vets people who hope to come to America, but as with all laws, it must be enforced. Michael Cutler, former INS agent states: Our immigration laws “are purely about keeping out criminals, aliens with dangerous diseases, aliens who are spies, terrorists, human rights violators, war criminals, fugitives from justice, aliens who would likely become a public charge, or aliens who would displace American workers. There isn’t a single word in our immigration laws that differentiate anybody by race, religion, or ethnicity, even though that’s the narrative being created by the fake media.” To hear the whole of this short interview click here.
Although we desire to have a compassionate heart and want to look out “for our neighbor,” we must also consider our next door neighbor and those within our nation who are put at risk physically and spiritually with a wide open immigration or resettlement policy. Are we really helping anyone out when we fundamentally change our nation by bringing in those who would change our laws and replace the one true God within our nation and Public Square? Would God speak to us as He spoke to Israel through Jeremiah? “Has a nation changed gods When they were not gods? But My people have changed their glory For that which does not profit.” (Jeremiah 2:11)
Think about these things and have discussions with others.
