4th of July-LIBERTY!

By: American Decency Staff

Has there ever been a nation in the history of this world, outside of Israel, that has been more blessed by God? I don’t think so.Perhaps it’s because there has been no other nation that has continually called upon God or that was fashioned with the express purpose of perpetuating the gospel of Jesus Christ. From Christopher Columbus to the Pilgrims to various state charters, all found their goal to be the “propagating of Christian religion to such people as yet live in darkness and miserable ignorance of the true knowledge and worship of God and may in time bring the infidels and savages living in those parts to humane civility and to a settled and quiet government…” (from the first Virginia charter). Men, women, children, and even those within our government recognized Jehovah as the one true God and called upon Him in times of distress and need, directing the people of this nation to times of prayer, humiliation, and fasting.

Our government and schools have done much to erase and rewrite our American history. When a people have no sense—or have a false sense—of their national heritage, it is easy to lead them in a different direction with different ends. Failing to pass down the many instances of God’s intervening Divine Hand during our nation’s founding, early years, and later periods, men have moved our children and our society to the point which God could say to America, “Has a nation changed its gods, even though they are no gods? But my people have changed their glory for that which does not profit.” (Jer. 2:11)

True liberty cannot be separated from the specific moral framework that God has laid out for mankind.  Jehovah is the Author of liberty and blesses those whom He will with it. Do we care so little for our liberty that we—with pride-filled hearts—refuse to recognize the Hand that gave to us this liberty we have enjoyed for so long? Does liberty’s worth seem so insignificant that we refuse to give thanks for it and strive to protect it as the precious gift it is? Let us not forget the lives, fortunes, and sacred honor that were forfeited throughout our history. Rather, learn of the men and women who sacrificed these things, for the sake of liberty, for the freedom to worship God, and for the spread of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Pray that God would give us hearts, minds, and a hunger for true liberty once more. That we would stand for Truth and liberty by the authority of God and His Word. In May of 1775, Colonel Ethan Allen wrested Fort Ticonderoga from its commander. When Colonel Allen was asked by what authority he acted on, he replied, “In the name of Jehovah and the Continental Congress.

In documenting this historical act of bravery, Colonel Allen began: “Ever since I arrived to a state of manhood and acquainted myself with the general history of mankind, I have felt a sincere passion for liberty. The history of nations doomed to perpetual slavery, in consequence of yielding up to tyrants their natural born liberties; I read with a sort of philosophical horror; so that the first systematical and bloody attempt at Lexington to enslave America thoroughly electrified my mind and fully determined me to take part with my country.” (emphasis mine)

I pray that God will raise up people with “a sincere passion for liberty,” people who will not “yield up to tyrants their natural born liberties,” recognizing that they are from God and attached to a moral framework. I pray that people will, by the power and grace of God, be fully determined to take part in learning the truth about our history and propagate the Christian religion to the glory and worship of Jehovah.

George Washington recognized God’s mighty hand  in the forming—and the necessity of His hand in keeping—this nation: “May the same wonder-working Deity, who long since delivering the Hebrews from their Egyptian Oppressors planted them in the promised land—whose Providential Agency has lately been conspicuous in establishing these United States as an independent Nation—still continue to water them with the dews of Heaven and to make the inhabitants of every denomination participate in the temporal and spiritual blessings of that people whose God is Jehovah.”

Yes, our Founding Fathers knew it was the Hand of God that made us the United States of America. They desired that we would set reminders before us that God delivered us and is worthy of worship and praise. John Adams, in closing his letter to his wife Abigail, regarding the Declaration of Independence, wrote:

The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore.

You will think me transported with enthusiasm, but I am not. I am well aware of the toil and blood and treasure that it will cost us to maintain this Declaration and support and defend these States. Yet, through all the gloom, I can see the rays of ravishing light and glory. I can see that the end is more than worth all the means. And that posterity will triumph in that days’ transaction, even although we should rue it, which I trust in God we shall not.” (emphasis mine)

It was on July 2, 1776, that the Continental Congress voted to declare independence from Britain. John Adams wrote the above excerpt to his wife the following day (July 3). The Continental Congress debated and revised the actual Declaration of Independence, and officially accepted it on July 4—thus explaining the difference in the dates.

This 241st birthday of our nation—July 4th—should move us to praise God for His sovereign Hand of Divine Providence and give thanks to Him for men who acted with responsibility to their sacred duty and for their sacrifice.Let us love liberty and be devoted to God almighty. “While we’re still free and while we still have time, we’ve got to teach the next generation that our country can only be protected from tyranny, moral relativism, and anarchy by finding the very context for freedom itself, the source of law in God’s revealed Word. It’s true, real liberty springs from the gospel.” (from video below)

Use Independence Day as an opportunity to remind those within your sphere of influence to look to the Author of Liberty with fear, devotion, and awe. Learn of His miraculous acts within our history and share how God has worked within your family’s history.
