Christians are the True Harvard Men

By: American Decency Staff

"Veritas Christo et Ecclesiae: Truth for Christ and His Church."

That is the original motto of one the United States' most renowned Universities: Harvard.

Not only that, but Harvard's original statement of "Rules and Precepts," going back to 1646, stated, "Let every Student be plainly instructed, and earnestly pressed to consider well, the maine end of his life and studies is, to know God and Jesus Christ which is eternal life (John 17:3) and therefore to lay Christ in the bottome, as the only foundation of all sound knowledge and Learning. And seeing the Lord only giveth wisedome, Let every one seriously set himself by prayer in secret to seeke it of him…"

Imagine that coming out of one of America's most prestigious institutions of learning!

Do you know what's coming out of Harvard now?

For one thing, Professor of law  Mark Tushnet's insistence that Christians advocating tradition marriage, as well as other conservatives, be shut out of cultural conversation. Indeed, he insists that we be treated as the Japanese or Nazis after World War II.

"For liberals, the question now is how to deal with the losers in the culture wars. That’s mostly a question of tactics. My own judgment is that taking a hard line (“You lost, live with it”) is better than trying to accommodate the losers, who – remember – defended, and are defending, positions that liberals regard as having no normative pull at all. Trying to be nice to the losers didn’t work well after the Civil War, nor after Brown. (And taking a hard line seemed to work reasonably well in Germany and Japan after 1945.)"

This is not some college student with a copy of the Communist Manifesto and an internship at a popular blog. This is a legal professor at the University where the nation's next generation of leaders is being trained! These are the ideas that Christians will have to deal with in the future.

We can already see it happening in the recent report regarding Facebook's "news curators," and the social network's blatant bias, in spite of its claim that its "trending" section is just a representation of the most discussed stories on the web.

"Facebook workers routinely suppressed news stories of interest to conservative readers from the social network’s influential “trending” news section, according to a former journalist who worked on the project. This individual says that workers prevented stories about the right-wing CPAC gathering, Mitt Romney, Rand Paul, and other conservative topics from appearing in the highly-influential section, even though they were organically trending among the site’s users."

Incidentally, that article by Gizmodo.com specifies that Facebook's news team was "primarily educated at Ivy League or private East Coast universities…" presumably including Harvard.

As the ironically dubbed "liberals" continue to amass power in American culture, conservative Christians can count on being boxed out of the conversation more and more. We can look forward to having our sentiments never heard or understood, but rather immediately drowned out by accusations of bigotry or intolerance.

We can count on being ostracized to the nerd table, while all the cool kids sit together and talk about how terrible it is to bully people who believe differently than ourselves.

This is what we have to look forward to, excepting the possibility of spiritual revival in our nation.

But this should come as no surprise to us. Remember John 15:19?

"If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you."

The world hates us because we belong to Christ, so even this rejection ought to be comforting, in a way.

As the culture continues to turn against Christ and His ways, let us be true Harvard men and women, in the 1646 meaning, and remember the "maine end of (our)life and studies is to know God and Jesus Christ which is eternal light."
