A Time of Prayer and Repentance

By: American Decency Staff

Earlier today I gathered with nearly 150 people in the city park of our small rural community to pray for our nation on this the National Day of Prayer.  The weather was bright and sunny, but the hearts of many, if not all, gathered there were heavy for our nation.

Young and old came –  students from Christian schools and  home schools, stay-at-home moms, men and women on lunch breaks from work, area pastors, many faithful aged ones – all gathered together, united in prayer.

We prayed for our nation.  We prayed for the Church.  We prayed for parents and children, our schools, and more.  Woven throughout the prayers offered was a deep sorrow for the sins of our nation, a recognition that we are deserving of God’s just judgment.  Yet we also prayed that God, in His mercy, would turn the people of our nation back to Him.

Rev. Ron Workman opened the time of prayer, followed by an opportunity for everyday citizens to come forward to pray.  And dozens did.

Sweet, innocent prayers from young school children.  Heavy-hearted prayers from senior saints.  Fervent prayers both from area pastors and from developmentally disabled adults from a local assisted living facility.  One elementary student from a local Christian school prayed: “Even if we get a president that we don’t like, we know You are in control, God.”

We were blessed to have Curtis Bowers, director of the acclaimed documentary, “Agenda”, as our special guest speaker.  Before the time of prayer, Bowers shared a meditation using passages from Nehemiah where he challenged us to rebuild the wall where we are – our families, our church, our community.  That is what God holds us responsible for.  Are we in the Word?  Are we following His law?  Are we leading our families to follow the Lord?    And, he challenged us not to be ashamed of sharing the gospel with those we come in contact with.  In essence – to be the salt and light to those around us as we are called to be.

The Bowers family also blessed those gathered with their wonderful ministry of music and as they sang, in prayer, “God Bless America” we all  stood.  We ended our time with the Bowers leading the crowd in singing the first verse of “Great is Thy Faithfulness” – reminding us that God IS indeed faithful.

As we were also reminded by Curtis Bowers, God’s faithfulness may entail judgment.  In Scripture, when God allowed evil to prevail in a nation and its leadership, it was to bring judgment and repentance.

It’s obvious America is deserving of judgment – lets pray today – and everyday – that God will bring about repentance.
