WHY ARE BEHAVIORS THE BIBLE CONDEMNS CONSIDERED ‘MORALLY ACCEPTABLE’ BY CHRISTIANS?

By: American Decency Staff

The Story: According to a new Gallup survey, Americans consider a variety of behaviors that the Bible condemns to be “morally acceptable.”

The Background:Since the early 2000s, Gallup has tracked Americans' views of the moral acceptability of various issues and behaviors. The overall trend clearly points toward a higher level of acceptance of a number of behaviors that the Bible clearly condemns. In fact, notes Gallup, the moral acceptability ratings for 10 of the issues measured since the early 2000s are at record highs.

The first number in each category list the number who consider the behavior to be “morally acceptable” while the second number is the percentage that consider it to be “morally wrong.” The third number is the percent change from 2001 to 2015.

Sex between an unmarried man and woman — 68 / 29 (15 percent)

Medical research using stem cells obtained from human embryos — 64 / 29 (12 percent)

Gay or lesbian relations — 63 / 34 (23 percent)

Having a baby outside of marriage — 61 / 35 (16 percent)

Doctor assisted suicide — 56 / 37 (7 percent)

Abortion — 45 / 45 (3 percent)

Sex between teenagers — 37 / 56 (N/A)

Pornography — 34 / 62 (4 percent)

Suicide — 19 / 73 (6 percent)

Polygamy — 16 / 81 (9 percent)

Married men and women having an affair — 8 / 89 (1 percent)

Why it Matters: Currently, a majority of Americans now believe that fornication between adults, homosexual behavior, having a child outside of marriage, doctor-assisted killing, and killing of humans in the earliest stages of development to be “morally acceptable.” If the current trends continue, in 20 years (2035) more than 1 in 4 Americans will also consider polygamy and suicide to be morally acceptable.
