Reasons for Hope and Despair For America

By: American Decency Staff

I’m weighing in on an article that I re-posted on Facebook entitled:  Seven Reasons to Hope for AmericaThe article is written by Don Feder, a former Boston Herald writer who is now a political/communications consultant.

"Sometimes conservatives seem to be misery junkies. It’s like we get a psychic thrill from telling each other that the end of the world is at hand."

Feder concludes his article by stating that:

“Problems we have aplenty. But while acknowledging the multiple crises which confront us, let’s not forget that the roots of American greatness are still strong.…”

I mostly agree with Feder that the roots of American greatness are present and yet I have reservations.  Significant reservations.  First this:

The sixth point that Feder notates is:  Reality can’t be evaded indefinitely Â–

It wasn’t [the Soviet Union's] command economy, or military overreach, or the lack of will to maintain rule by an ideology no one really believed in any more. It was reality that doomed the Soviet Union. Whatever dogma it’s dressed in, attempts to remake human nature will fail.

The left’s chickens aren’t just coming home to roost they’re coming in with feathers flying, squawking madly.

The Baltimore/Ferguson riots were courtesy of liberalism’s destruction of the black family.   If Islam is the religion of peace, ISIS must be having a peace march across the Middle East. The fact that in the United States 72% of new HIV infections are confined to 2% of the population demonstrates that “sexuality” is not without consequences.  The suppression of speech on campus and the persecution of Christians everywhere reflect the innate Stalinism of the American left. The unfolding nightmare of Obamacare shows the hazards of bureaucratized medicine.

Despite media manipulation, academic indoctrination, and politicians addicted to lying, reality will always have the last word. More often than not, it’s no you can’t.

But then there is this contrasting article: Darkness Covers the Land, But God’s People Say and Do Nothingwritten by Bill Muehlenberg who is widely sought out by the media for comments on social issues, faith issues, and family issues, and has appeared on all the major television and radio news shows, current affairs shows, and debate programs.

It is a worthwhile read.  Here is a short snippetEverywhere we hear the sound of crickets chirping while things continue to go down the gurgler fast. Even more incredible is the fact that in so much of the world Christians are dying the most horrific deaths, often at the hands of devout Muslims, but most Christians in the West seem not to care in the least.

They are dead silent. And that may well be because they are dead – at least spiritually speaking.

I am now in America, the most Christian country on earth – at least nominally. And there may be what – 80 million evangelicals here at least? On a long train ride through the west and midwest, I spotted plenty of churches. Every time I saw one, I shot up a quick prayer to God that revival would hit them – big time. …

Muehlenberg concludes with the followingThe judgment of God cannot be far away on our Western churchianity which refuses to speak out on what really matters, and instead rambles on about heretical trash like ‘having your best life now’. Lord have mercy on your people.

We are each at different ages and stages. Our experience level and backgrounds are vastly different.

Some are naturally light and some are more apt to be contemplative, serious.  Others are morose.

Who is to know the time when the Lord will return?  No one knows the time but the Lord.

Nonetheless, God’s word is true.  Some are inclined toward living as if all is well.  Others not so much.  The variety of responses to the daily unfoldings are many.

Matthew 24:36-40  But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. 37 For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, 39 and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left.

Don Feder writes about a “root of American greatness."  However, at the same time there is corruption and evil bringing degradation at warp speed at the highest levels in our government, Federal courts, colleges and universities, our public schools, families.  Our churches, as Muehlenberg writes, seem oblivious, or at the very least they are silent.

The beheadings, the raping of hundreds of thousands of little children, the butchery, the escalating treachery around the world goes unanswered day after day after day.

We don’t know the hour of the Lord’s return.  We know there are warning signs all around:  wars, rumors of war, earthquakes.  We know these things must take place, but the end is not yet.   Mark 14:7.

I close with Muehlenberg’s words from his article:

On a long train ride through the west and midwest, I spotted plenty of churches. Every time I saw one, I shot up a quick prayer to God that revival would hit them – big time…
