Ronald Reagan’s Speech in the Modern Context

By: American Decency Staff

My Dad, Robert J. Johnson (1923-2008), served in Germany during World War II – the 63rd Infantry Division (June 1943 to September 1945).  They wore the red and gold shoulder patch of the Blood and Fire Division.

In a book that Dad gave me a year before he died dedicated to the memory of the 63rd Infantry Division there is a quote at the very front of the book from Omar N. Bradley, General of the Army.

It states:

….. the rifleman trudges into battle knowing that statistics are stacked against his survival.  He fights without promise of either reward or relief.  Behind every river there’s another hill—and behind that hill, another river.  After weeks or months in the line only a wound can offer him the comfort of safety, shelter, and a bed.  Those who are left to fight, fight on, evading death but knowing that with each day of evasion they have exhausted one more chance for survival.  Sooner or later, unless victory comes, the chase must end on the litter or in the grave.

Omar N. Bradley – General of the Army

One of my strongest recollections is being at one of the many games that Dad took me to as together we stood with thousands of others for the Star Spangled Banner.   I don’t ever remember a time that I didn’t see tears in his eyes as he sang that glorious song.

It said it all.  He loved America and he loved freedom as I do!

How could we not love freedom and honor those who have given so sacrificially.

God bless them and God bless America!

I conclude this with this powerful clip of a Ronald Reagan speech with video in a modern context.  It is well worth your few minutes of remembrance and forward looking.
