We received this urgent request. Please read the following information regarding the proposed doubling of Michigan’s gas tax and sign the online petition here.
Also, forward this message to your friends and family. Today, Wednesday, and Thursday are the last three days of the legislative session, so time is short. Please take action today.
From Representative Tom McMillin:
This is the final week of session for the state legislature this term.
Right now, both chambers are working to cut a deal to raise the gas tax. Another bill would force online retailers to collect Michigan sales tax.
And because we're in the "lame duck" session post-election, anything goes.
11 state senators are retiring at the end of the week and the remaining 27 were just re-elected to their second and therefore final term. They are pretty much immune to pressure from constituents.
The Senate-approved road funding plan would double the state gas tax!
Michigan Capitol Confidential reports that while the House-approved plan would devote more state money to roads with no tax hike, Governor Snyder "says the state needs to bring in $1.2 billion to fix the roads, and do so quicker than either plan would allow."
House Speaker Jase Bolger is under pressure from the governor and from the Senate to accept a compromise deal, and his spokesman has indicated a compromise is possible.
We need every concerned taxpayer in Michigan contacting their state representative and contacting Speaker Bolger's office, and urging them as strongly as possible:
"No new lame duck taxes! No Internet sales tax, no gas tax hike!"
Please click the link above to sign the above petition, which will be sent to your representative in Lansing as well as to Speaker Jase Bolger:
Dear Representative [Name],
In these final three days of session, it's more important than ever that the House hold strong against any attempt to raise the gas tax in Michigan. And now is not the time to rush through legislation that would turn online retailers into tax collectors.
The Republican legislature has made great progress in making Michigan a more economically competitive state in recent years, and now is not the time to introduce job-killing tax hikes. Instead, you should stand strong behind the House-approved plan to fund our roads without doubling the state gas tax, and oppose any vote on any Internet tax scheme.
I will be carefully watching the votes this week and hope I can count on you to do the right thing.
Sincerely,
[Your first name and last initial]
Whatever deal is made or falls through, the legislature adjourns this Thursday.
The last three days of session are today, Wednesday, and Thursday of this week.
So it's critical you sign the petition right now, immediately, as a deal could be struck as soon as today!
And once you sign the petition, please forward this message to your friends, family, and other concerned taxpayers in Michigan.
Time is running out.
It has been my privilege to serve the past six years in the state House, and if together we can put a stop to higher taxes, it will be a great finish to three terms of working to move Michigan forward.
And I can assure you: petitions and letters do matter. State legislators don't receive as many letters as you might think, and organized efforts can really have a big effect.
We need to prove, right now, that even after the election, even in lame duck, Michigan's taxpayers are vigilant and will not stand by while their elected representatives vote to raise taxes against their will.
Please take the time to sign the petition and let's keep Michigan moving on the right track.
For a better, brighter Michigan future,
Tom McMillin
P.S. The last three days of the session are upon us, and this is our last chance to stop tax increases from being signed into law. Let's finish 2014 with a win!
Please sign the petition, and pass this message on to others to do the same.
