It’s a good thing the Chinese have a reputation for inscrutability. Otherwise, they would almost certainly have laughed out loud during Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel’s trip to China this week.
First, he urged them not to behave irresponsibly towards their neighbors. Then, he announced that China’s belligerence was going to be met by a U.S. military build-up in the Western Pacific.
Seems President Obama’s “pivot” is underway, at last. Indeed, we’ll have precisely two more anti-ballistic missile destroyers in the region – but not until three years from now.
Lastly, Mr. Hagel actually briefed the Chinese on one of America’s few remaining secrets – U.S. cyberwarfare doctrine – in the hopes that their military would be equally transparent. Fat chance. Instead, expect Beijing to remain fully secretive, while derisively exploiting the vulnerabilities we’ve shown them.
