Here a polygamist, there a polygamist, everywhere a polygamist.  That’s how it seems on the cable channel TLC.  In addition to the series “Sister Wives” and a previous mini-series entitled “My Three Wives” about a different polygamist family, TLC is now profiling a third polygamist family in a new series “My Five Wives” which premiered last night.

According to an Associated Press report:

The newest polygamous family from Utah on reality TV considers itself progressive and independent. Williams and his wives slowly withdrew from the fundamentalist Mormon church in their rural community outside of Salt Lake City during the mid-2000s after re-evaluating their core beliefs.

The family no longer teaches the tenets of fundamental Mormonism to their children at home, opting instead to take from other teachings such as Buddhism to instill good, morale (sic) values in their two dozen children, who range in age from 2-20.

"Since we have left the religion, it's now about love and it's about commitment, and it's about happiness as a family," said Brady Williams, 43, a project manager in his brother's construction business. "It's not about the fear of hell or the promise of heaven."…

… Brady Williams said the increasing social and legal acceptance of gay marriage has helped society open up toward plural marriage….

Sadly, that is exactly what is happening in our culture.  As we fail to defend marriage as God designed it, not only is gay “marriage” becoming legitimized, the door is also opened to polygamy and any combination of people one wants to “decide” is a “marriage.”

And thanks to TLC’s positive portrayal of polygamy as just an “alternative lifestyle,” there is a growing acceptance of polygamy. Take a look at some of the comments posted online regarding this new TLC show, My Five Wives:

–          Who are we to decide what is right and wrong. If this family is truly happy, than I say Good For Them! To many people look for fault, not the positive side. Maybe there is something said for families with multiple spouses.

–          For me one wife is great; however, if more than one works for you, than go for it. Gay marriage is now accepted so multiple spouses, man or women, should be accepted.

–          If they are all happy and willing consenting adults and the kids are well taken care of (as it seems they are), then who am I to judge?

–          If gay marriage is to be legal, why can't polygamy be legal? Almost every single pro-gay marriage reasons out there can be used on a polygamous relationship.

–          As long as children are not "forced" into marriages, I don't have a problem with any idiot that wants more than one wife. We should stop trying to force our puritanical beliefs onto people and become the free country that we say we are. Everybody should be allowed to choose their own happiness as long as it doesn't infringe upon others, or lead to health issues for the community.

–          Hey, if they are all consenting adults and don't have an issue with it, why should we? As long as they can afford to take care of themselves and all their children I don't see why it's anybody's business how they choose to live their lives. I would never in a million years choose to live that way, but to each their own.

To each his own.  All of these comments sound very similar to the book of Judges when “everyone did what was right in his own eyes.”   As Brady Williams, the polygamist “husband” states:  “There is nothing wrong with consenting adults living and loving how they choose."  At least according to him.  However, he is not the determiner of what is right and what is wrong.  And neither are we.  God is – and His Word is clear.

Thankfully, there is still a remnant that recognizes Truth.  Some of these also posted comments online:

–          That's how it goes.  If you do not put your foot down to affirm One Man One Woman marriage you have no say in marriage what-so-ever.

–          First no fault divorce, then gay marriage, now polygamy, coming soon incestuous marriage, pedophile rights, and inter-species marriage. You think the slippery slope is a crazy idea but 10 years ago gay marriage was called crazy too!

–          TLC has done untold damage to the fabric of this society. This is just one more example.

–          Wow, how perverted can America get? We are falling faster than the Roman empire did!

–          So there IS a law against polygamy, except the Attorney General of Utah doesn't enforce it, right? It seems to me that he has violated his office. He can pick and choose which laws he wants to ignore. Is this what Attorneys General do?

–          Those are CHOICES made when in a marriage. Unfortunately, even in married couples when divorced the ones who suffer the most are their children. Under these particular circumstances, polygamy, they surely are affected one way or another too. It is not a NORMAL part of OUR culture or society. There is CERTAINLY multiple reasons why it is so….NORMAL families have been REFINED now to the convenience of "MY BASIC RIGHTS" and the freedom to do with one's life as you will. TRUE…partly. Has anyone stopped to think for a minute the CHILDREN'S right to a NORMAL family? a FATHER and a MOTHER as it has been meant to be?…

–          Who says legalizing gay marriage doesn't impact society? The article itself said making gay marriage legal has now made it easier for polygamous relationships to gain acceptance. The Bible condemns both as sinful. … Wickedness of every kind is gaining acceptance where it never has before, especially in America. … Satan knows his time is growing short to deceive and destroy the masses. He's influencing fallen humanity in every sphere. Be spiritually prepared to meet Christ! Be spiritually born again! …

–          Sad there would be enough interest in this lifestyle to even think of creating a show. Who watches this trash?

–          This is why we haven't watched TV in over 8 years. It's all trash and it poisons and deceives the mind.
