The Tale of Two TV Shows

Take Action!  See below for action links.

The tale of two television shows – the first has been described by some as “likeable,” “fascinating,” “characterized by an aggressive, relentless good cheer” with “adorable” kids.

The second TV show has been labeled as “tawdry,” “trashy,” a “cheesy, sleazy melodrama with lots of soft-core sex scenes” – and these comments came from secular media reviewers.

The first show has no tasteless innuendo, no overt sexual displays or erotic imagery.  In fact, the most recent episode even lifted up the importance of abstinence.

The second show is filled with little else except tasteless innuendo, overt sexual displays and erotic imagery.

The first show refers to “commitment in marriage.”  The second portrays marriage as meaningless.

The second show is obviously not a program we would recommend for viewing.  It is ABC’s “Mistresses.”   With explicit heterosexual and lesbian sex scenes, “Mistresses” has earned its description as “trash.”  As one person commented online about the premise of ABC’s Mistresses:  “I agree this concept is just really disgusting and not the type of morality we should be pushing onto kids, and this is coming from someone who is extremely liberal, I understand wanting to be edgy but this is just wrong.”

However, while the first show mentioned above may sound like the next “Cosby Show,” it, too, is unfit for family viewing.  In fact, in some ways it can be more dangerous because of its subtle indoctrination.  The show is TLC’s “Sister Wives.”

Most people still see adultery as morally wrong – exemplified by the self-identified “liberal” commenter above.  “Mistresses” is a show that many parents would prevent their children from watching – hopefully.

However, “Sister Wives” is much more insidious.  On the surface it looks like just another harmless, albeit insipid, reality TV show that families could watch together.  Yet as they do, viewers are given the message that marriage is “anything we want it to be” – undermining the true definition of marriage as ordained by God.  In addition, woven throughout the program is the idea of “live and let live” – which was also a theme of the latest episode.  The false notion that “tolerance” means putting a stamp of approval upon any type of chosen lifestyle no matter how degenerate – labeling those who claim absolute truth in regards to morality as “judgmental.”

Innate in our very being, for those whose consciences haven’t been warped, desensitized, and deadened, is the knowledge of right and wrong.  And the concepts portrayed by “Mistresses” and by “Sister Wives” are absolutely wrong.

However, the fact that these shows are even on the air is a troublesome indicator of the condition of our culture and our nation’s collective conscience.  Millions listen to the master deceiver who whispers, “hath God, really said?” as adultery is portrayed as “thrilling” and marriage is said to be “anything one wants it to be.”  While television has been instrumental in changing beliefs in the past, it is in the process of doing so again.
