Remembering Jimmie Bulger

By: American Decency Staff

Two boys back in 1993 fed off the horror movie “Child’s Play III”.   They grabbed an innocent little two-year old boy from his mother at a butcher’s shop and beat him with bricks and did other unspeakable things and tied him to a railroad track.

Though I had never forgotten this sickening account, I was reminded of this horrific attack from the BBC article below in which Jimmie’s father is interviewed as 20 years have passed since his young son’s murder.

His mother had turned away to pay for some meat and glanced around a moment later to find James gone.

CCTV images revealed that James had been enticed from the doorway of the shop by two older boys who took him to the upper floor of the mall and outside within minutes.

James's body was found two days later on a freight line. He had been stripped from the waist down, paint had been thrown in his eyes and he had been beaten to death with bricks and a heavy metal bar. …

These young boys fed off from horror movies including “Child’s Play III”  and acting out actions and ideas that they had garnered from this perverse, broadly distributed movie.  (By the way, Child’s Play III was distributed by leading mainline video rental outlets.  I know because our boycott finally drove “Child’s Play III” out of a Midwest based chain outlet after months of protesting.)

I remember hearing about this incredible account and being jubilant as I became aware that the judge in the case cited the connection between the violent video and the violent murder of James Bulger.

Usually it’s the whitewash from the media, the public schools, the university. NO CONNECTION. Time and time again what we see and hear is the following:  “There is absolutely no connection between the violent material and/or the pornographic and violent/pornographic material and the criminal behavior of rape, molestation, incest, assault.   It is only incidental.”   They turn a blind eye to common sense – that what we view does impact!

In the 1980s, there was a former Lieutenant Detective Darrell Pope who was oft quoted for a study that he oversaw.

*Michigan state police detective Darrell Pope found that of the 38,000 sexual assault cases in Michigan (1956-1979), in 41 percent of the cases pornographic material was viewed just prior to or during the crime.

This study was often cited by anti-pornography activist organizations.  I  personally contacted Pope via phone and mail in earlier years.  He sent me a personal account confirming his findings.

More importantly, the vast majority have seen first-hand the power and persuasion of images in one form or another.  Why else would major corporations spend millions and millions of dollars on thirty second ads?

In spite of the overwhelming evidence, Pope’s study was heavily maligned in the late 1980s and 90s by the liberal media and entertainment industry.

Oh, be careful little eyes what you see.  Frankly, and you know it, many of us are losing the battle with our kids as we fail to lead, guide and mentor them regarding their eyes, ears and minds.   And, what about your eyes?

Each of us our surrounded by so many voices of irrationality that lead us into watching and listening and looking at screens containing triviality, inanity, frivolity, indecency, pornography.

"But while he slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way."–Mt 13:25.

Notice that we become as the seed we receive–those who receive the wheat-seed become wheat; those who receive the tare-seed become tares. "As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he." How careful we should be over the books we read, the companionship and friendship that we form, the recreations that we take part in. Such are some of the processes by which our characters are being made. If we are thoughtless and careless, we expose ourselves to the reception of tare-seed, which germinates into weeds and rubbish.

Are the people we are influenced by and the mindless activities we amuse ourselves with wheat seeds or tares?

Peer groups
Family
Co-workers
Fellow church members
Inane cartoons
Hours of games and more games
Television shows fostering godlessness
A careless usage of cell phones

This poem is a appropriate way to close don’t you think?

Those little Eyes Upon You

There are little eyes upon you and they’re watching night and day.
There are little ears that quickly take in every word your say.
There are little hands all eager to do everything you do,
and a little boy who’s dreaming of the day he’ll be like you.

You’re the little fellow’s idol, you’re the wisest of the wise.
In his little mind, about you no suspicions ever rise.
He believes in you devoutly, holds that all you say and do,
he will say and do in your way, when he’s grown up just like you.

There’s a wide-eyed little fellow who believes you’re always right,
and his ears are always open and he watches day and night.
You are setting an example ever day in all you do
for the little boy who’s waiting to grow up to be like you.
