Hardee's and sibling restaurant chain Carl's Jr. are again provoking people of faith with controversial advertising. But the public has an avenue for fighting against it.
Bill Johnson of the American Decency Association (ADA) tells American Family News that CKE Restaurants, Inc., parent company of the two restaurant chains, has been using pornographic ads since 2003 — when Hardee's and Carl's Jr. featured a porn king and Paris Hilton in their raunchy TV commercials.
"This time it's a bikini-clad model wearing seductive clothes and [exhibiting] seductive behaviors," Johnson details. "It's, again, a very concerning advertisement — all of this in the name of advertising for the sales of a hamburger. Unbelievable."
The ad premiered on the West Coast during the Super Bowl and is now airing nationwide.
With the common knowledge that "sex sells," the pro-decency activist recognizes that some people "lack discernment" and fall for that type of advertising.
"But at the same time, [the restaurants have] gotten clobbered over and over again, and apparently, it's just another mechanism to try to get that momentary bounce in sales from those who are especially vulnerable to such things," he submits.
The ADA cites Webster's definition of pornography — "material created for the purposes of eliciting a sexual response" — and reasons that this ad is pornographic.
But Johnson goes on to report that there are ways for people to fight back.
"We believe there are many people like ourselves who, until [the restaurants] make a drastic change, will never frequent Carl's/Hardee's again," he states, "and that certainly includes us."
That message, he notes, can be communicated to the restaurants' top management via email through the ADA website.
