I have some exciting news to start off the new year. On New Year's Day my wife gave birth to our first child – Reagan Cassandra Johnson!
She was expected to come a little later, on the sixth, but God and the doctors thought it would be better if she came sooner. God knows His own reasons, but the doctors were concerned that ultrasounds showed a very slow growth rate of just a pound and a half between weeks 33 and 39 and the doctors just weren't quite sure why. This, of course, had mommy and daddy a little concerned about what to expect when our baby girl was finally in our arms.
So on New Year's Eve we canceled our plans and went to spend the night at the hospital. My wife was induced that afternoon and almost exactly 24 hours later, our little one was born – the first baby born in our hospital in 2013.
Reagan entered the world at a healthy 6 lbs 5 oz and 19 inches long with a head full of hair, lungs full of air, and a very relieved set of parents.
What a way to start off the new year!
When my wife was pregnant all we would hear is, "well, life is about to change forever!" usually followed with a slightly unsure, "but it's a good change."
It has started changing a great deal already. Our lives are now revolving around when the baby needs to eat and how to get her to sleep through the night and panicking every time she sneezes.
I'm sure many readers have their own experiences and could tell me, "just wait." And that's what we'll do.
But God has already taught my wife and I a valuable lesson in 2013 – “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble." (Matthew 6:34)
God is in control and has always been in control.
We know that 2013 could see some big changes. We keep hearing about gun control; we know the Supreme Court will make decisions on gay marriage and Obamacare; and the Middle East continues to writhe in turmoil.
It's scary to bring a daughter into this world and to know what she may have to deal with in her lifetime, but we know that God is sovereign and he loves us and He expects us to trust Him.
Worrying won't change a thing.
Happy New Year
