Biden said the administration was working with Turks, Jordanians, and Saudis "to identify the people who deserve the help so when Assad goes…there will be a legitimate government that follows, not an Al-Qaeda-sponsored government." But Ryan pointed out there are so many extremists now operating within the opposition that separating Al-Qaeda elements from the rest is nearly impossible.
Recent reports reveal that Biden's claim was simply not true. And the truth is that at least one of the countries Biden said the U.S. is working with — Saudi Arabia — is actually sending weapons to "hard line Islamic jihadists" fighting against Assad.
A U.S. official speaking on anonymously says, "The opposition groups receiving the most lethal aid are exactly the groups we don't want to have it."
What makes Biden's claim even worse is that he knew it was false when he said it. As The New York Times reported, when Biden made these claims he was not only fully aware that aid was going to Islamic jihadists but also that the administration's approach of "indirect and minimal intervention" in Syria was not working.
The Syrian conflict has now cost over 25,000 lives.
