Politics and Porn

A press release by Morality in Media revealed today that the GOP's official platform will include strong wording and a commitment to target obscenity and pornography under a Romney presidency.

Patrick Trueman, president of Morality in Media and former Department of Justice prosecutor under Presidents Reagan and H.W. Bush, calls the promise to crack down on illegal porn, “an exceedingly positive development that will protect children, as well as families from the scourge of hardcore pornography.”

Truman added, “Distribution of obscene or hardcore pornography on the Internet is a violation of current federal law.  Yet, most children in America have free access to obscene pornography as soon as they learn how to use a computer.  The average age of first exposure to obscene Internet pornography is now eleven.”

Lifesitenews.com reports, "On average four out of five 16 year-olds now regularly access pornography online, 56% of divorces cite Internet pornography as a major factor in the breakup of the marriage, and significant and growing numbers of men in their twenties are developing 'porn-induced sexual dysfunction'”.

Under current federal law, distribution of hardcore pornography is illegal both via the internet and in hotel rooms. Under the last several administrations, however, prosecutions for obscenity crimes have been rare and distribution and use has exploded.

The platform revision comes after several years of tame and uncontroversial GOP statements under the candidacies of Bob Dole and George W. Bush, but follows closer to the party line under Pat Buchanan which called for a "national crusade against pornography."

Recent GOP platforms only opposed child pornography.  The new wording of the Republican platform will read, “Current laws on all forms of pornography and obscenity need to be vigorously enforced.” 

Both Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney called for stricter enforcement of anti-pornography laws during the campaign for the Republican Candidacy, but many wondered whether Romney was serious about his commitment. The founder of one gay porn company even endorsed Romney for president, saying, "I don’t see any danger coming from Romney when it comes to porn. It’s just not there.”

Apparently, itis there, and it's encouraging to see pornography becoming a national issue again.

May God use the extra publicity for this issue to change hearts in America and bring us back to Him.

This election is about far more than jobs.  While of course the economy is of grave concern, how we vote will also have great impact – for better or for worse – on issues such as the definition of marriage, protecting religious freedom, defending life at all stages, and the opposition to pornography and obscenity.   If we Christians go to the polls and vote our values in accord with God’s principles, we can make an impact on the direction of America. 

God has been merciful to our nation.  Let us humbly seek Him and His undeserved grace once again.
