Opposing NBC’s agenda-pushing “The New Normal”

NBC’s fall television season began with a bang – or rather, a slap in the face – of conservatives and the vast number of Americans who embrace traditional family values.  Last night saw the premier of “The New Normal,” created and produced by Ryan Murphy, the openly gay producer of “Glee” and the truly depraved and perverse cable shows “Nip/Tuck” and “American Horror Story.” 

As is typical of Ryan Murphy, his shows push an agenda and “The New Normal” is no different.  Murphy once boasted that his goal is to push the envelope until there is no restriction from explicit depictions of sex on network airwaves.  He stated:  “It’s tough to get that sexual point of view across on television.  Hopefully I have made it possible for somebody on broadcast television to do a rear-entry scene in three years.  Maybe that will be my legacy.”

That quote should tell you all you need to know about this latest show from a producer who, as stated above, is pushing for a depiction of sodomy on network television!

“The New Normal”centers on two homosexual men who want to have a baby; the young woman, “Goldie,” who applies to be their surrogate and carry a baby for them; Goldie’s 9 year-old daughter;  and Goldie’s grandmother, “Nana.”   

Nana is the Hollywood stereotype of all of us who hold traditional values – a racist, bigoted, homosexual-hating, gun-toting, intolerant, ignorant Midwesterner. 

Every story needs a villain, and within the opening minutes of the show it’s made clear to the audience that this “intolerant homophobe” grandmother from Ohio is the evil antagonist and the two “loving, devoted” gay men are the heroes of this Hollywood fairy tale.

Here are just a couple examples of the over-the-top, vulgar dialogue which drive home the view that conservatives are all bigoted homophobes. 

Nana sees a lesbian couple she mistakes as a gay couple: "Would you look at that. Just strutting down the middle of Buckeye Road in broad daylight, as proud as gay peacocks.  … And now with the PDA (‘public display of affection’)?  Those a– campers have some nerve."

“I happen to love the gays. I could never get my hair to look this good without them.”

Later Nana shows her intolerance and disdain for the disabled:  "I had to ride the bus today. The bus! I was sitting next to a man with no arms. He was drinking a Thermos full of mushroom soup with these little stublets coming out of his shoulders. It was like watching Flipper try to drink a beer."

Nana can’t believe her granddaughter is going to carry a baby for the homosexual couple and tells her:  “I feel like I just ate a black-and-gay stew before falling asleep. What are you doing helping these salami-smokers?" 

In addition to making such crude references to lewd homosexual sex acts, “Nana” goes on to make derogatory comments about Jews, Asians, and African-Americans.

Nana is derogatorily compared to the wife of Newt Gingrich by one of the characters and is told:  “take your Callista Gingrich hair cut and your racist mind back to the past or the South where it belongs.”

Besides labeling all who oppose the gay agenda as “haters,” The New Normal also throws in an explicit sex scene with close-up shots of nearly nude breasts, homosexual kissing and bed scenes, and extremely raunchy dialogue on this 9:30/8:30pm Central NBC show.

But if Message #1 is telling the audience that conservatives and those holding a biblical view of homosexuality are hate-filled bigots, Message #2 of the show is to portray any type of “family” – and specifically homosexual “families” – as normal.

When one of the gay men is hesitant about bringing a child into a “non-traditional family,” the other points out a variety of “families,” stating:  “Abnormal is the new normal.”

And in a scene designed to be a “Hallmark moment,” the sweetly-portrayed young woman, Goldie, who agrees to carry a baby for this gay couple, tells them she specifically chose to be a surrogate for a gay couple  because – “a family is a family and love is love.” 

Awww.  You could practically hear violins playing and birds singing during this saccharine scene. 

And this is the ultimate message NBC’s “The New Normal” is sending to viewers – that what truly is abnormal should now be accepted as “normal.” 

While those who hold biblically moral views of homosexuality and marriage are labeled as bigots and haters, Hollywood wields its power to inculcate millions of viewers with the lie that marriage and family have no meaning because any combination of sexes and any number individuals can make up a marriage and “mother” and “father” are meaningless terms because all children need is “love.”

If we do not defend God-ordained normal marriage and family, the “abnormal” will become accepted.  Shows such as this which indoctrinate millions with a 30 minute sitcom do have great power to influence thinking within our undiscerning culture.  That is why we urge you to not only stand with us in opposing the messages of “The New Normal,” but also to be a light-bearer in your spheres of influence – with your family, friends, co-workers, and within your church – shedding light on the lies of this present age and lifting up the Truth God spells out so clearly in His Word.
